EldoVert Gets another Car

For my 1974 Moto Guzzi Eldorado with Convert drivetrain I first had a Velorex....

...but wasn't sure I would like it hooked to my bike....so I getting this 70's Ural car to put on it...maybe I'll quit looking and actually ride the thing now

I like that Blue too. I had a 78 BMW R80/7 that color with a Ural chair painted to match.

I know this is an old thread but, I really like and have questions regarding your machine.
First off, love the Eldo! I also like the idea of a sidecar with it. Did you ever change out in favor of the Ural body? I am really curious about the 'convert' transmission and how it behaves with the sidecar?

The reason for all of the questions? There's a '77 convert with a terraplane sidecar attached near me. It has a leading-link frontend and all of the touring bags, including fairing on the Guzzi. However, my wife is disabled and can not mount the Terraplane body. I'm considering a Ural body change.
If you did change your bodies, how difficult was it to remount the Ural?

Have you found the 'Convert' transmission capable of any off-road (non paved) ability?
I really like the idea of the Ural motorcycle but, can't put my wife at risk by having a less than reliable powerplant/drivetrane. I have owned several Moto Guzzi's over the years and am comfortable with them. However, I have never owned a 'Convert' model so have no experience with them. Do you think a modest traction tire on the back of the Guzzi would be compatable with the 'Convert' transmission?

I'm hoping for answers to any of my questions, so if you have any first hand experience regarding ... Have at it!

After 27 months and several thousands of hard gravel road miles, I have no complaints with the Convert trans on my '76 rig. I keep up with some of the fastest large D/S riders around while on gravel, but on pavement I top out around 75. My car is quite heavy. I'm running a 130x18 Shinko 700 D/S tire on the rear and a 4.10x18 Shinko 244 on front. When the front wears out I'll replace it with a 700.

I am pretty sure that you would not be able to remove the Terraplane body and drop on the Ural body. The Terraplane has somewhat of a perimeter frame and the body drops into it in a couple of pieces.

The Ural body is going to need a Ural frame. A different sidecar on that bike might mount quite a bit differently as Terraplane was originally a 3 point mount, but I have seen a few changed to 4 points.

The Convert is a great sidecar tug. I have a Ural sidecar on a Convert myself.

I've got a friend with a Guzzi Convert and Ural sidecar that has a documented 1 million miles on it. Yes he finally had the engine rebuilt but the Trans had no problem pulling a Ural sidecar all those miles. I wouldn't worry about it.

We have done many Guzzi rigs, My general manager has many miles on his Convert rig, my wife has an Eldorado that had over 200K on it when we purchased it. We make bike specific mounts for many of the Guzzi's as we are life members of the NMGOC and often go to the Washington state Guzzi club events as they have a monthly breakfast about 10 minutes from our shop.

Love the Guzzi/Ural sidecar rig with the knobby tires! That's just what I had in mind! Lol
Yeah, I didn't think the Terraplane frame would be compatable but I had to ask ...

Not sure how much I'd invest in brackets to mount a Ural to a Guzzi Frame ... I think it runs around $725? Then add $2,000 to $2,500 for the Ural sidecar complete. I have seen the old Terraplane's being sold (or at least advertised) for around $1,200 complete? Not sure what that market is like ...

The Guzzi/Terraplane rig started at $5,500 a few months ago. Lately, it's at $4,500 ... It's almost on the Mexican border, so three hours drive each way from where I live.
