Carl - mid June through July is best. Europe goes on vacation in August, so there is fierce competition for resources, and before mid June, a lot of hotels and such are closed due to taking a winter break.

Earlier than June is a real crapshoot and anything later than mid-September is too. Especially on the higher passes.

Funny I just linked into this RR from JM also.

Thanks for the RR. Looks really cold and better suited for skiing than biking in April.
We skied in Val Gardena last year and loved the Dolomites. Thanks for motivating me to start thinking about a trip back this winter
