Wicked A few questions please

:)I'd like to ask about th GS. What's your average tank range on th regular 1150 GS,& what about th Adventure? I'm leaning towards th regular GS because th Adventure seems too tall. I like th idea of th big tank for more range, but i like th split seat on th 1150 regular. Also what can you folks tell me about maintence cost & oil consumption. TIA ron

I get about 200 until the light comes on, 240 before I need to refill on a std. GS.

That's 'normal' riding w/o a passenger. My bike has an Aeroflow & Jesse bags, both of which hurt the fuel mileage some I think.

My 1150GS' light comes on at 174 or 175 miles. It doesn't get coddled much and as a result probably will produce a fairly crappy mileage number compared to some others.

I maintain it really well and wring it's neck on every ride.

My fuel light comes on usually between 170 and 185 miles. Depends on how much I used the heated grips and how aggressively I played with the throttle.

I went 265 miles and put 6.4 gallons in my Adventure. I was down to 1 bar on the RID but the low fuel light had not come on.

'02 GSAdv - solo with Jesse's and gear... 315mi! The light was on for a loooonnnnggggg time! 8.2 gal at fill up! Because of the gearing I got much better mileage out of my '00 GS (40-42mpg) than I do with my '02 GSAdv (36-38mpg). I usually cruise the freeway at around 85-90mph.

'00 GS with 3.0 rear diff - Go to about 175 mi before I 'need' gas. Standard windshield and BMW bags. I got the same range before I changed the rear diff.

My light comes on between 190 & 200 miles without luggage. I can't remember the number with luggage, but it is significantly less. I don't like to use the topcase unless my wife is riding shotgun. It seems to make it handle weird in windy conditions. Maintenance costs vary with dealers. I pay $180 to over $300 depending on which service it is. Mine seems to use a couple quarts between services, but I haven't really kept track. Some don't use any.

I've squeaked maybe 240 out of a tank. My light has never come on...and never will...:)

These bikes are some of the easiest in the world to work on so your costs will be just fluids, filters, etc.

on a regular ride (solo, both panniers, A and B-roads) at medium speed the light comes on at 200 miles. After that there are about 30 or 40 miles left. the bike is a GS standard (?)

I missed the oil consumption part of you rquestion. My '00 GS used oil right up to when I old it with 18k miles. Not much... I'd add somewhere between 1/2 -3/4 qt every 3k (oil change time). My '02 GSAdv is not consistant. I'll go 3k and use maybe 1/4 qt; other times closer to a full qt. I have spent more time giving the Adv of road beatings which is probably why.

2 qts between services

Is this normal oil usage? I usually do my own maintence, for th past two years i've been on a 1800 Wing, so far i have 54,000 miles on it, it uses about 1/3 qt every 2,000 miles of hard interstate riding, tires last about 14,000 miles, front pads 35,000 miles. Th maintence on it is very easy & inexpensive.I would be usin th GS for every day commuting & long distance riding. Thanks for takin th time to reassure me that i'm makin a GOOD choice in th GS.This seems to be a GOOD board & a good place to visit.I'm on th GL1800 riders.com also. ron

It varies dramatically from engine to engine. I know mine uses more than 1 qt between 6000 mile services (it has 24,000 miles on it), which seems like way too much for a modern engine. The old sportster engine in my Buell hardly uses any oil.

Some people have said that parking on the side stand contributes to oil consumption, which I do every day at work because the parking lot is dirt. My new job has a paved lot, so I'll see if using the centerstand helps.
