My brother owns a 2010 that looks just yours. His bike had a 14 tooth sprocket on it but he changed to a 15 tooth and he says he really likes the way it runs now. He said it tach's about 600 rpms less than it use to. It was overheating on him before he made the sprocket change but now he doesn't have that problem.

I don't remember how many teeth on my counter sprocket but I went 1 tooth up and it made a nice difference.

Yea, I've been thinking about going this route also, when it comes time to replace my '89 Ninja 250 (only has 88,500 miles on it). Seems like most of the bigger bikes I've been looking at cost more money , get less gas mileage, shorter fuel tank range, and double or triple the cost of insurance .

Good mileage testimony to how well these bikes last, very few People keep them long enough as you have to realize the miles you can put on.I figure if your riding by yourself most of the time and just commuting stuff like you do in a car,the extra cost that comes with a big bore bike isn't worth it,it's like having a Pickup Truck and never using the bed, lots of people do that and that's their choice.

The only time I recently wanted "a bigger bike" was riding from Eugene Oregon up to Salem on I5 a month or so ago. I had ridden my brother-in-law's Ducati 748 a week or so earlier and that felt so stable and planted on the highway.

But, I rarely ride interstates, so about 97% of the time my bike feels totally up to the task. If I were to get a "larger" bike I would be seriously considering the 300 Ninja or the SV 650 that a lot of former Ninja 250 riders move to and highly recommend.

But I on my last long trip I got 70 mpg on the trip up to Salem, and taking a more sedate route home, I got 75 mpg. LOVE that! Also, having gone to a 15 tooth front sprocket its nice to be turning around 8K and doing nearly 80 mph indicated.

Being of small stature the Ninja 250 actually fits me pretty well, and while I have felt a little cramped riding, I am sure glad not to have a larger/heavier bike when I am walking it around in gravel or the like!

Edit - Tony, it is great to hear about more higher mileage 250's out there. Mine is getting close to 40K miles and its nice to realize with proper maintenance it can go for a many many more miles.

Carb problems

I picked up a 2001 with less than 200 miles so the carb was pretty gummed upped. The pilot jet on one side won't come out and due to repeated trys the slot on the jet is getting messed up. Looks like the 08 and newer carbs are less expensive and are just jetted differently. Anyone know for sure if I can pick up one of those and rejet it to work with the 01? I'll keep trying on the pilot jet but looks like someone was in this carb before me and didn't do it any favors.

TIA
