Two things I've seen, though not really creative,

I'm doing 65MPH Speed limit is sixty, It's about 5AM and I'm riding to work on Telege RD here in Houston, At 5AM that road is deserted--Have some ass hat tailgating me, I'm about to pull the good ol Down-shift gun it, something in my head tells me not to--I slowdown to get into a turning lane..lo and behold it was a State Trooper on my ass..

Our unmarked cars on this end of town look like normal cars, Green, blue what ever--the windows aren't even tinted--Once again flying down Telge at 75, Pass a car on the side of the road-car had NO lights no NOTHING on--suddenly red and blue's in my mirror, I thankfully got off without a warning, he just told me to slow down..

And this final one, WHILE NOT CREATIVE--the spot on HWY 249, As you go under the Sam Houston Tollway there's a hill you go over--The speed limit also suddenly goes from 70 to 55--At the bottom of the hill EVERY DAY from 7am-10Am and 4PM-6PM there's a state trooper with a radar at the bottom of the hill, I've seen him pop a lot of people.

Cops in Wilmington NC dressed like homeless people and radared from behind shopping carts.
I thought that was creative. They thought it was genius.

Saw a (moto) cop in Salt Lake City, bike parked behind a bus stop.
Standing in the bus stop hammering folks coming from the airport.

Think the speed limit dropped from 40 to 25 right there, and it was a work zone at the time.
So double the fine.

Of course it was Saturday, and no one was working.

Yep, everytime I'm through there I see at least a couple pulled over and getting a little hand written love note.

There's actually a good reason behind it, too. California apportions speeding fines differently than most states. Here, no matter who writes you up, the state keeps most of it and the locality where the ticket was written keeps a little. So there's far less incentive for a small town to set up a speed trap because most of that ticket money goes straight to the state. It's almost as if the law is supposed to go enforce speed for safety purposes, not to raise money for the city

A town like Morrison, CO, whose revenue stream is based entirely on speeding fines, would not be able to exist here. Also screw Morrison.

Some towns here have figured a way around this. They will offer to allow you to plead to a municipal catch-all ordinance called "Impeding". This is not a traffic offense, so there are no points, but it's more expensive, and the town keeps ALL of the fine. In the end, the driver probably does better because the offense doesn't appear on his driving record, and his insurance company never finds out.

A few years ago they had a pedestrian awareness campaign. I'm cruising down a medium sized road doing right around the speed limit and as I approach a crosswalk a guy pushing a cart starts out right in front of me but I see Mr. Porky sitting on his bike so I lock up the rear brake and slide to a stop to let the homeless looking person cross and then I just cruise on. I didn't even put my feet down when I abruptly braked, I think the copper nodded at me. This trap barely gives you any time to react.

Hence why i like marked and lit crosswalks where the peds have to hit a button and wait. None of that jump out right in front of a car BS.

A few towns here did a similar thing, passing municipal ordinances against, say, running red lights, and then citing you for that. Roseville did it with their traffic cameras, which was the final straw...

The state got tired of it after a couple years and banned municipal ordinances that duplicate state traffic laws.

The Maryland State Troopers can be sorta creative.

One example on the MD side of the DC beltway quite a while ago was the use of an unmarked vehicle --

Most impressive one I've seen is a bunch of cops up on a new un-opened overpass gunning cars on the freeway below. Underneath they had a squad of moto cops to run down the speeders.

I was lucky. I was doing exactly 10 over which is the limit here but the girl next to me was going slightly faster and got nailed. Scared me for a second when one of the bikes came after us as we passed.

That's why they call it Impeding. It's not a traffic offense and it duplicates nothing.

It blows my mind the way some people think.

Speed limits are a joke. That is exactly why people exceed them. Speed limits exist for ONE reason, and that's to generate revenue. Ticket costs are set to be expensive, but not so expensive that people rebel. The goal is to make them just pay it without fighting it or otherwise caring. Otherwise, they start making noise.

The whole reason the roads suck today is directly related to speed limits. It'll take waaaay too long to explain it all, so I'll sum it up as quickly as I can. Speed limits are set low for enforcement reasons. People who drive them for whatever reason (fear of a ticket, feel like they're "obeying the law," or whatever) end up clogging up the road for those of us who prefer to take our chances. The slower speeds are boring for everybody because it requires very little attention. So they fill their attention with other things -- phone conversations, texting, make-up, shaving, whatever. And they become even worse drivers.

It's been proven time and time again that faster drivers are safer drivers because they PAY ATTENTION. Yet they're the ones paying the tickets, and that's f'd up. WE all know that we're safer riders because of the attention required, otherwise our lives are at serious risk.

But the gov't wants to enforce a lowest common denominator mentality with driving, and so those who CAN drive are penalized, while those who can't get away with it. Instead, we should be requiring much more driver training, more frequent testing, and much stiffer penalties for those who are truly bad drivers. I just replied to a post on Jalopnik earlier today talking about how NHTSA wants to drop the BAC level to 0.065, but that's just another band-aid. The answer is stiffer penalties. How many former DUI offenders end up getting another? Or end up killing somebody? Many from what I've read. IMO, one DUI is it. Get a DUI and you're done operating a motor vehicle FOREVER in this country. Drive again after that and you go to jail for a LONG, LONG time. And this crap where cars don't see motorcycles and kill riders and get off easy needs to stop too. Anybody who causes an accident and kills somebody, whether in another car or on a motorcycle, bicycle, pedestrian, whatever, should serve mandatory jail time of at least five years AND lose their license for life.

Okay, enough of that rant. Now back to the topic at hand.

When I left Florida for Omaha back in 1988 (going to my permanent assignment at Offutt AFB), I was driving my then-new 87 Acura Integra (red). I used a CB and radar detector. I was crossing Illinois, somewhere near Mt. Vernon I think, and passed an unmarked tan cop car parked in a turn-out between the freeway, but obscured by lots of brush. He was walking his dog. I transmitted the details on the CB and kept on about my business. About five minutes later, I see a car closing from way behind. Cautious, I drop to the speed limit and set the cruise. Sure enough, it's a Crown Vic, likely a cop. Interesting... it's tan. Hmm... he's pulling me over, wtf?

He explains to me that he saw me pass by and thought my back window was blacked out (it was full of my stuff and I had a dark blanket covering everything), but saw now that he was mistaken. Okay, sure, whatever. He lets me go. I figure he heard my CB broadcast and wanted to fuck with me.

Going across Missouri (same trip), I radioed the position of a cop with moving instant-on radar going eastbound. Not long after, I see another car moving up from behind very quickly. Again, I slowed. It was the same cop. He comes flying up on me, sits in the left lane about 20' back, zapping me with his instant on every few seconds, for like 5-6 minutes. He finally gets bored and turns around. I chuckled and continued on my way.

Now as for hiding places.. in the SF Bay Area, San Jose/Fremont area along 880, I would see motorcycle cops blending in VERY well with the white concrete barriers placed just after overpasses, on the right. They'd run radar or laser. And as others pointed out, they like to hid up at the top of on-ramps so you don't see them til too late. That's when you have to watch cars ahead of you for brake lights, as they will sometimes see them and habitually brake. I also like to watch on-ramps in the OTHER direction and make note if I see any, for the return trip.
