A tid-bit of insider info on TheBakemon's first fire-up of the XV, the time was around 3 A.M. I think before it's over the neighbor's will rue the day he moved in.
Atta boy !

Dude! Turn the music off so I can hear my old bike running once again! Sounds about like I remember. By now you've probably noticed that the MAC pipe is rusted out beneath the rear cylinder and that the patch I made for it is no longer holding. Maybe you can splice in some good pipe and keep using it.

At any rate, congrats on getting it going again and I wish you many happy miles and years.

Durn you guys! Mine's been sitting inthe garage for 12 years under cover. The starter's been shimmed twice and now needs a new one, the front calipers are stuck, and the carbs for sure need a good soaking, but the last time I checked she still looked good. I was gonna sell her but after reading all this I not so sure.

Don't sell it unless forced to do so. I owned mine for 22 years, during which time it lived outside. A year after the sale I finally got a house with a huge garage and wish I had the bike back so I could treat it better, but TheBakemon looks to be doing a fine job with it now.

If you sell it you'll miss it, but how could you let it sit for so long? Even I would have gotten around to fixing it by now.

There's a 1971 xs 650 sitting next to it, that my dad bought new, that's been sitting since '93. It gets restored first. Oh I forgot the '66 Bultaco Matador in the basement.

There is a lot rusted out of that exhaust. I know that because when it started it all shot out the back! Haha

Yeah, I planned to by a new MAC for it. Luckily, those are still available and reasonably priced. Not much chance of finding nice stock pipes for a machine this rare but they do turn up once in a blue moon.

The patch you see was my attempt to fix the first set of holes that rusted out. I cut out metal patches and hammered them on a sandbag into cup-shaped pieces that would wrap the curve of the pipe and cover the holes, then I gooped them into place with muffler patch, then wrapped in wire with more goop. Held for a couple of annual inspections.

I preferred the look of the stock pipes but had to be practical about it. If you feel like spending big bucks there's a Welsh outfit named Gazbike that builds a gorgeous stainless 2-into-2 for this bike. Good luck with it!

You'd likely be better off trying to use the head pipes off a Virago.

Here are some pictures of my engine break down. The top of the rear cylinder is in the last picture. There are metal rings going around the outside of the piston, as you can see they are trashed. any ideas on what they are I am not familiar with them. Can they be replaced?

Was that a Mac 2in1 together with a centre-stand ?
(Cause allegedly those two don't go together…)

Cheers,
Greg
