I guess I would need to try one.
It was just a shock coming off a little TU250.

I have had big bikes in the past, but nothing with all that stuff in the front, and no water cooled bikes.

I will have to check out the older klr's also.

I think you guys are nutz!

Do these bikes handle the dirt better then I think they would, or are you guys just amazing and tough?
lmao. I'm only 5'7", 150lbs, and I handle my '12 just fine anywhere. I love um cause they're the best of both worlds/go anywhere kinda bike. Yes, it's f'in heavy, yes, they're tall, but I grew up on dirtbikes and love um ta death. The main reason I'm wanting to do the wheat whacker mod is so I can go keep the shield up at higher speeds or go to a more open helmet.

We need to meet up for a ride at some point too.

Nice looking kit. Want to ship it to me?

What size wrenches and sockets do you carry?

I got my thermo-bob in the mail today. Unfortunately I have drill starting tomorrow and will be going down range, so it'll have to wait until Monday to install.

Mileage has slowed down a bit as I'm just daily commuting to/from work but I'm at around 350 miles since purchase. I'm not 100% sure where it was when I got it. I think I'll start counting at 21,000 miles. Too bad I can't reset the odometer.

So............. the shinkos handle much much better on pavement. Mainly i think because of the overall narrower/oval profile of the tire. Kendas are a flatter tire. They handle the same off road as the 270s. But the shinkos don't come close to the millage of the kenda's. Only got just about 5,000 miles (70/30 pavement/dirt) out of the rear 244 before it looked almost like the 8,000+ k270. The front still going though heavily cupped so i may ditch it in another 1k. Definitely going back to a k270 rear and still not sure on the front.

Shinko 244 just shy of 5k miles

I like the 244 better, even if they don't last as long, the 270's felt CRAZY! on the street...

I have not used 244's yet,but the 270's did feel sloppy on my DR350 no matter what air pressure I ran in them.

How about some pics of the piston/rings, cylinder wall, etc. I am curious what you have found. Have you done a solvent test on the head yet?

KLR650 Only Thread......

Me no Alamo. Me no Goliad. In other words, I ain't got nothing to do with this except the boxing it up and sending it off. What I understand my buddy TXjames is saying is that the valves were "way outta spec" and "may have been damaged probably by over revving" but that there is no obvious ring or piston or cylinder wall damage. He "thinks" its gonna need a valve job. Top of piston is pretty nasty with burnt oil.

So clearly a manufacturing and design defect. ;)

Box shipped out today .

Sounds like a pretty good diagnosis considering how you described how it had been ridden.... As most of us suspected it sounds like the valve seals were the culprit of the oil source.... Glad to hear you are getting her taken care of! I look forward to following your project...

KLR650 Only Thread......

Valve job was expected. By James, anyway. Still hopeful but....it has happened before. :( I am doing that big ebc rotor SV650 caliper big master cylinder reservoir mod at the same time as the 688. Don't know which one I am more excited about. The stopping or the going. ;)

Speaking of tires, has anybody else ran the Michelin T63's? They came on the bike and seem to work well all around. I'll figure out how long they last.
