I wouldn't touch it, let alone ride it

Thanks for your thoughts guys. I declined on the bike. I think I was mainly tempted because I just really want a bike. At least I got to take it for a short ride. The guy told me that much oil use was normal. I told him that's crazy. Oh well, back to the hunt.

wise choice not to buy.

all credit to the seller for being up front about the problem

The real worry with an oil burner is not so much the consumption of oil but that as a direct consequence of that its been run low on oil at some stage - that’s what normally/eventually causes the big bang and subsequent wallet emptying ceremony

DR's arn't normally that thirstdee....I'd say you made the right choice...she's poked mate.

Its amazing how well a bike like that can run right before a new owner hands over the mula then ... then then inevitably

1 litre in 400ks ?... pffffft amateur.

Its when you drain a crankcase of oil before a tank of gas is when you really know you have an oil burning problem.

Good choice not to purchase as there is no adjustment or additive that will fix that consumption.

I too am glad he was upfront, and also glad I asked him about it. He didn't mention it until I asked. Would have sucked to find out the hard way.

Well, I bought those two 1982 xl500's that were on trademe(Wellington). Not sure if any of you saw them. I'll be getting them next weekend. I got a bunch of riding gear and a new helmet too. All I need are some riding pants to be complete. I got one of the FFM Adventure/Dual Purpose helmets. I've been curious about them and it was only about $200 so I thought I'd give it a go. I love old Honda's and can't wait to get on and go! I'll be looking for riding company soon. I'd love to go ride next weekend after I get the bikes, but we're moving the same weekend so I'll probably have obligations to help the wife set up the new place. At least I'll finally have my own garage!

Cool to hear you got some bikes. :)

Are they runners? Got any photos? Have you been anywhere yet?

Yep, they both run great! I've pretty much just been riding to work and back. Weather hasn't been so great, and I've been busy so not much riding for fun yet. Well, all riding is for fun, but haven't gotten off the sealed road yet. I actually got a flat on my knobby rear, so I haven't been riding it. I got some blocks from work today that I think I'll be able to put the bike on so I can pull the wheel. Anyway, here's some pics.

And the helmet.

I like it so far. It's a little loud and fogs a bit, but that's the worst I can say for now.

The bikes look mint. What brand is the skid lid?

It's FFM. Right at $200 everywhere I looked. Local Honda shop is where I got mine. No one in Blenheim carried it in stock so I had to have them order it. Fits same as their motox helmets that they do keep in stock.

Been a long time since I've been on here. I still haven't really done any good off road riding with the bike. Been busy shooting my longbows lately. My dad builds bows back home and he sent me my bows a couple months ago. Went to a tournament south of chch last weekend and ended up getting second! Time to start shooting broadheads. Anyway, I'm putting the Hondas up for sale. I should have listened from the start and got something my wife and I could ride two up on. I bought a 97 1100gs though! I have to go to Fox Glacier to pick it up this weekend. I"m going to bus there then ride home. If the weather is alright I may take my little tent and spend a couple days getting back to Blenheim. I won't have any extra stuff in case of problems (extra parts, flat fix), so I'll probably stick to main roads. Anyone have any suggestions on a good route from Fox to Blenheim, or want to tag along for a ride?

That roady version looks to have FT500 wheels & forks. Should be a great combination, aye Padmei.
