Anybody riding or driving any vehicle with foreign plates have to pay FONAT when entering El Salvador.

Cars $35
Motorcycles $45

i have an idea. since all central-american countries appear to want to discourage foreigners from entering their beautiful but corrupt little countries, why not just make it simple: $500 flat fee. that will work for sure.

Not a bad idea if this would help to keep people away , who think of us as "corrupt little countries"

except we still visit even though they may be corrupt. keep making it inhospitable and eventually people stop coming = loss of revenue. always a good thing for the people and the economy.

That's funny right there.

When is this fee supposed to be administered or is it already in place? When I went through in October I didn't have this kind of fee to pay. Guate already charges Q160 to enter.

Don't worry. The fee only applies to travelers who MAKE IT to El Salvador in one piece. Stop crashing, you two. Jeez. Rest up and get well.

Does this new 'fee' apply to all entries, or only overland borders?

This fee applies only to your vehicle, not to the person .

one aspect of these fees and people's attitudes toward them is that if the US charged them, people would bitch about it as being discriminatory and wrong and yada yada yada. then, other countries would "retaliate" by charging the same. not quite the same, but similar to the visa war between the US and australia, brazil etc etc.
