What a gas! Our friend Niggles has been yakking on and on about how cool this vintage event is and we finally gave in to go watch. What a mistake! I wanna race too! It looks, smells and sounds like the good ol' days and these guys are getting it on.

Found a couple photos of Niggles on the internet: (hey Pedro)

CRR Steel Stampede Video

Crew Chief Randy created an interesting little video of our recent trip to the CRR Steel Stampede. Warning: first minute is some nutty squirrel yakking away...

Excellent vid, but I gotta say, that music had me expecting to see an axe murderer leap out of the bushes.

Upgrades

After catching up on a few honey-do's on Saturday, decided to show the SL350 a little love. One of the SL's brought home after Crooked River has been deemed (at least for the moment) as a parts bike, so let the cannibalism begin! I decided that I needed a flatter seat (so I can move my skinny a$$ around a little easier) and until I can get one built by the multi talented TwinDuro, a stocker will have to do.

Before seat change and wash, also note decrepit bike stand;

With seat from newer SL350;

Bike stand after some additional cutting for pipe clearance, inserted a spacer in the left side (those darned unequal frame heights!) and a rattle can paint job. Later I added rubber pads for frame contact, a lynch pin for the handle and a used & abused hand grip from an old throttle assembly;

Bike all washed up with new seat and upgraded stand;

Speed Moto (http://www.speedmotoco.com) is putting together a jet and needle assortment so I can get the carbs sorted out before the next event (August 4, AHRMA VMX in Elkton Oregon) and I'm still considering what if any changes to make to fit another class. Right now I'm leaning toward continuing to develop this bike as far as possible and if the ESS class (Early Stock Sportsman) becomes a viable option, throwing together a stocker out of the existing parts bikes.

Shop Upgrade

Latest project is to cement the other half of the shop floor, we have been working on old dryer felt (over gravel) for the last 3 years and can't wait for this upgrade.

Some before shots;

Moved most of the bikes to the barn or pump house;

Getting there;

Danny says "hurry up dad, I'm tired already!";

With Luke's help the mower deck was pulled and the blade and tiller installed;

More prep;

And while we're at it, let pour a floor for the shop porch;

About another week and we should have some new concrete!

Concrete and flaming chicken coupes

This weekend we started putting the shop back together, but also being mindful that the next step is to insulate and panel the walls, tried not to pile too much against the walls and then having to move it all again.

A few shots of the new floor;

This was a working weekend, we also dismantled our old chicken coupe and burned a big pile of wood and debris that has acculated the last 3 years. With the chicken coupe partly dismantled we decided to pull it over with the tractor and then went at the carcass with crow bars and sledge hammers, lots of good manly fun. Luke was a big help and seemed to really enjoy the whole process. I told him that if we'd been thinking, we would have set the chicken coupe on fire first and had him stand on it while we filmed it being pulled over, and made our own Jackass episode.

Shop Porch

A few "after" shots of the shop porch, including the new wash area constructed of left overs from the local Habitat for Humanity retail store.

Wash station, total cost (including wash basin) $39. The back splash was a solid wood closet door purchased for 3 bucks. Next up will be some kind of faucet and hillbilly drain system and also shelves & hooks.

Sl350 k0

While out in the country looking at a vintage car my brother was going to buy, we happened to notice an old 350 twin sitting it the back of a truck parked under some trees. Looked like it had been there for years. Went back a few nights later, bought it and brought it home.

Here it is in the back of my truck, not sure if some parts of the bike are actually green or just covered with moss and algae;

It appears to be 1969 SL350 K0, the electric start version like I had in high school and became my first race bike. Despite the overall condition, there are some very good parts on this bike (like the mufflers) but since these models are becoming rarer it might be worth fixing. The worst problem it has is the motor is out of a CB350.
