LA traffic really depends on time of day.
During the week expect gridlock conditions during rush hour

6am-10am
3pm-7pm

More or less, also the route, if you are going around LA then I would take the 15-210-5 route which goes around LA instead of through it.

Traffic is worse on holiday weekends and Fridays in general, and direction of travel also makes a difference.

So expect traffic, end of story.

He could have just said, "Expect traffic. Always."

If you don't have to ride through LA, don't. Ever.

Well, I'll share my experience from earlier this week, traveling to LA to apply for my passport, then again to pick it up...

Tuesday morning, I had an appointment at 9:30 at the federal building on Wilshire, just off of the 405, in Los Angeles. I figured if I left by 8 am, I'd get there in plenty of time. As soon as I got onto I-5 heading north out of San Clemente, the traffic notification on my gps went red and said the delay was 1:52... I laughed, thinking it was an accident and by the time I got up there it would be cleared. This trip, by the way, was 77 miles each way.

On the way up, traffic was heavy, but was moving along pretty well. I was in the car pool lane and lane splitting when necessary. After I got past Long Beach, traffic was nearly stopped. I thought I'd found the area where the accident was, but was wrong... Traffic stayed like this until I got to the Wilshire exit. I was able to lane split, but with traffic crawling along, it was still slow... I arrived at the federal building at 9:45, and luckily was still able to go to my appointment.

On Thursday, I rode up to pick up my passport, leaving at 1pm. I arrived at the federal building at 2:10, with no real traffic issues, just normal. On the way home, the GPS traffic again warned of a 1:32 delay and traffic was slow all the way through Long Beach on the 405 coming south. Lane splitting and car pool lanes are your friends.

Like the others have said, if you can avoid LA, do so... If not, be patient, and ride with your head on a swivel. The cagers are not looking for you, they are too busy texting and crap...

I remember, yes... Does your injury prevent you from driving a car?

work, who said I have a job...?

I've been unemployed since February, and since I'm not getting any younger, decided to retire instead of looking for another position right away. I'll look for another job when I run out of money...

I am driving with one hand, it would not be fun to drive while you are riding that is not fair especially on the way back to cross the border
What is your plan to cross the border?

I understand, dude, maybe by the time I return in the middle of July...

I plan actually to just ride up, through, turn around, and do the same again... I really do not want to spend any more time than necessary on this part of the trip. I'm only doing this to complete the North American part of the journey.

Originally, I had thought of doing the iron butt ride Border to Border Extreme (Mexican border crossing to Canada border crossing in less than 24 hours, but thought better of it this time...

Layoff is payoff. Enjoy your trip

Ive been following your GS build that thing looks great. You have the right weapon for a big trip like this.
Ill be watching Ive been wanting to do A trip to Alaska also. I myself am recovering from a layoff 3 years ago and working a bs low pay job. Now things are coming together. Might do an east coast Canada trip first.

Stay safe ride on

Unfortunately, I'm having a flare up of my Crohn's Disease, so a slight postponement is required... I was going to leave a week from today, on May 27th so I could meet up with SpecialAgentNancy for part of the trip. But now, I'm probably going to ride the whole ride solo, just to ensure I do not frack up anyone else's ride.

I'm still going to do this, still prep'n the bike, still getting ready as best I can... I'm not going to let Crohn's Disease run my whole life - it already runs part of it...

I received the parts today to repair my windscreen - I broke one of the mounts while riding at the Jimmy Lewis class.

I also received a couple of other items that I need to mount on the bike... I'll be doing the installations this week... I also have to go to the DMV (ugg!) to take care of the registrations on my bikes and car before I go...

I hate pressure... I'm feeling lots of pressure with this plan... I hate pressure...

I'm feeling better and am back on track with my plan... I'm probably going to delay a day or two, or maybe even change the beginning of the trip altogether...

I can say, I am still going...
