Compass Expeditions Motorcycle Tours – Highlights of Peru

Is there any continent in the world more suited to motorcycle touring than South America?
Compass Expeditions would argue that it’s Highlights of Peru Tour that has its members ride F650gs BMW motorcycles from Lima, Peru to La Paz, Bolivia and vice versa has to be one of the most fantastic cultural and scenic motorbike trips to be found anywhere in the world.

From the point of arrival at sea-level in Lima, Peru, this motorcycle tour is an expedition through history starting with a ride along the desert highway to the Nazca lines where you will climb down from your motorcycle and into an aeroplane for the overflight. Further south we will visit beautiful Arequipa, which has arguably the most beautiful plaza in Peru before we begin the climb into the Andes.

From this point we enter some of the most dramatic terrain on the face of the planet with the high Andean Altiplano being home to mountain Guanacos, Alpacas and Llamas and the people who are the Quechuan descendants of the Inca civilization. Whilst we enter a land more sparse with a smattering of adobe huts we find that the people become more colourful and more welcoming. We visit Condors in Colca Canyon and continue onwards towards Lake Titicaca and Cuzco.

Cuzco (or Cusco) is the most fantastic city in Peru, the seat of the Inca Empire and its cobbled streets are alive with music, restaurants and cafes serving traditional and Andean fusion cuisine, museums, bars and history. This is also where we begin our journey to the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu by rail, weaving along beside the Urubamba River and feeling as we descend that the mountains are getting higher, the valley is becoming narrower and that an incredible sight awaits us at the end. Machu Picchu is incredible and we recommend taking the time to just sit and contemplate the work and skill that went into building it. This ancient citadel is a testament to the Inca Empire and the people who built it.

The journey with Compass Expeditions ends in La Paz, Bolivia but this is just one of the many South America trips that we have available.

We have just 4 spaces remaining on the 23rd August – 6th September Highlights of Peru motorcycle tour for 2013. We would love for you to come along with us and explore Peru, Machu Picchu and the beauty of the Andes.
