My reason for starting at West cape is that we live over this side so we ride 2 days to get over and have the Monday for everyone to get home. If we start at East Cape then we have take time off work to ride over then have our 2 days riding back then leave the Monday for people to get home.
It would be cool to start at Sunrise on the East Coast but I don't think there is much accomodation close.
Maybe some one from over that way could advise of accomodation close ? Gisborne would be to far away to come from.

The closest place I know would be the Te Araroa motor camp. We stayed there a while back, all good.

Cheers

If can fit it in, I'll meet you guys at the East Cape and join you for whatever distance I can. Maybe some other people from my region will do the same.

Yep, but I won't be :-). I don't have the time to ride all the down, but I should be able to ride some of the way back. I won't be able to wear the t-shirt, but that's OK.

Could be interested in this one depending on the weather ( Too cold for fishing now ).
Would likely meet the group along the way somewhere too.

Let us know a basic outline of the route and what towns we would be staying in as soon as you can Phil / Col.

There was a Cape to Cape ride in '97, I did it on me XR400.
Started at Te Araroa and went through to Taupo the first day and then through to Cape Egmont on Day Two. Johnny and I did summat in excess of 1700 kays on our trail bikes in three days my arse was pretty sore as I recall.

We got stopped by armed cops outside Taumaranui on the Sunday - it was the day of the Raurimu Shootings...

Okay folks, time for a bit of an update. We have a basic route layed out. Colin's been busy on his computer on Basecamp and it's spat some distances out. Our plan A is Cape Egmont to Whakatane on day one and Whakatane to East Cape via Motu then back to Whakatane on day 2.
Day 1 mileage would be around 560km plus your accomodation to the start distance.
Day 2 around 550 km.
So plan A involves big days. We will provide a GPS file so you can travel at your own pace and should you want to, can take an easier( main road )

So what's plan B. making the days shorter and taking an extra 1/2 day to do it and taking the Tuesday off work to get home.
For those that have expressed interest in this ride, what do you reckon ?
