Baja Bound

I am enjoying reading your RR. I have been riding and living down in Mexico since December 15, 2012 and am on my way home now. I will be entering Baja via the Topolobampo Ferry on around April 15. I am riding a heavily loaded 1150GS, I injured my knee three weeks ago and that has kind of changed my ride. I want to stick to the pavement in Baja this time. In the South I would like to go to Los Cabos and to Todos Santos... am collecting other destinations from this report and others. I was thinking of re-entering the US at Tecate. Their seems to be conflicting information about whether I can turn in my TVIP there. Anyone have a definitive answer on that one? I could probably cancel it out in La Paz... do I need to have it for BC Sur? Routing suggestions/lodging suggestions/tips for Baja travel are all appreciated. My RR is in my sig line.

Thanks,

David

mefadv, Bg22, muddyrabbit— Woo-hoo, that was a lot of work, huh!
Thanks for sticking with us. I still have moments where a memory comes flooding
back and I'm transported back to the trip...awesome experience. Not sure what the
next one will be, but it's roiling around on the back burner.

Hey, hope you have a great time in Baja and your knee heals up well and quickly.

Don't have a definitive answer on the Tecate/TVIP question, but there is a Banjercito in
Tecate open from 8-4 seven days a week, and you can get them issued at the aduana in
Tecate, so I don't see why you couldn't turn them in at aduana there as well. At the worst,
just head over to Tijuana to turn it in if Tecate doesn't work, right? But it's NOT a good idea
to turn in your TVIP in La Paz, yes you'll want it with you the entire time you're in Baja,
only turn it in as you're crossing the border into the USA.

Good luck!

You're welcome, Bob. From reading LittleWan's reports I'm guessing there's a connection with firetrucks...

Did you catch the collection at Tecopa Springs?
3rd photo down.

No, I missed them. I only remember thinking of a great place to camp and checking out your tents and gear.

So thanks for the Fire Engines!

Great report!

Thoroughly enjoyable read! Baja is on my hit list in the next few years - your report just made me a little hungrier for it! LOVE the ride, surf, fish, camp and repeat...

Excellent report, HWD, thanks for taking us along. One more plan for retirement...
Re the DR tail light breaking - the flush mount DR250 tail light is a direct fit, maybe the breakage is why it's a popular mod'? And yeah, the DR weighs ~60# more than your 250, but it's a dry weight!

Thanks,

Have the TVIP taken care of (canceled) in La Paz or Ensenada. You do not need a TVIP in Baja at all. You might need your visa but again no TVIP. If you try to cancel it in TJ you will have a very large cluster fuck.

Hardworkingdog is OK slightly incorrect on the TVIP issue...........again there is no need for a TVIP at all in Baja, north or south period...............

Yeah.

Actually, I prefer just slightly incorrect, but what do I know. I imagine doing it in La Paz would work, and
of course you don't need the permit at all if you stay in Baja. It seemed to me that turning in the tvip is something
you do as you leave the host country. Oh well, more conflicting advice for RMO.

This ride report is probably not the best place to have discussions about tvip's anyway

I just read your whole report the last two evenings. thanks for posting it.

We're going on a guided 3 day tour next week. There's 9 of us. 7 of us are from Hawaii and 2 from the mainland. A couple of other guys that we don't know will be there. My older brother is meeting us to go. He taught me to ride as a kid and I've only ridden with him once in 20-something years.

I'm definitely going to do the whole thing some day. That time with your son will be cherished forever. I can't imagine being able to do that with my dad.

Thanks J P

Glad to see you resurrect this report. I was hurtin' bad after the Sharks game last night , and went to sleep by reliving some of Baja TLW...

What a great trip, I'm anxious to top that, or at least try.
