Question KLR600 Burning Oil?

So after fixing this bike I finally decided to take it for a longer ride. This is the result.

It was kinda going black, and I assumed that it was just from the exhaust mod that the former owner decided to do, but I took it about 200 miles and the rear fender was twice as covered as it was before, and the oil had gone from the top of the glass to about 1/4 from the bottom. I assume that it's burning oil. Before I rebuild and replace the rings is there something easier to do? I ask because I probably won't get around to a rebuild for another year or so.
Here's a photo of the complete bike:

I'd put valve guide seals in it, they must be hard as concrete after all these years. The old ones weren't known for oil ring problems like the new ones. Guide seals are super cheap, not so easy to replace if you've never done something like that.

Part number for the 650, should be the same; 92049-016

i'd check the compression before anything. when i had valve guide seals go south (not on a klr, so maybe the oiling is different) i would get a cloud of black / blue smoke on startup, and then it would go away. would valve guide seals allow oil into the combustion chamber while running? i mean, would it continue to migrate that way?

i agree that the seals are probably shot, but what's that drop, 1/2 qt in 200 miles?
none of us is as dumb as all of us
