Laugh Finally got a GSPD

The first time I really looked at a GSPD much as at D2D last year and I've wanted one ever since. The day after D2D my motor seized in the middle of nowhere between the border & Chicken and there was one near Anchorage that I should have bought but I was stuck in Fairbanks and just sold my KLR for next to nothing and flew home.

I found this last night on Craigslist and it won't run because of a broken throttle cable. It has aftermarket Mikuni carbs and the PO had some stock cables modified to work and one of them broke. It hasn't been babied and needs some other work including a new drive shaft boot. What are some things I should immediately check?

Thanks!

Ha. True that.

As I was unloading it a new neighbor with a British accent asked if I had a tough trip. Told him "I wish" and how it wasn't running and he said he noticed the "scramblers" in my garage. I need to sell him my old KLR.

Change all fluids and check the drain plug magnets on the trans and final drive for metal particles. Fine metal fuzz is normal, but gritty particles you can feel between your fingers or fish-scale-like flakes are bad news. Replace the driveshaft boot as it keeps crud out of your driveshaft which already has a tendency to fail early anyway. When you pull the swingarm off to replace the boot, pull the shaft out of the swingarm and make sure the u joints have ZERO play in them and are nice and tight. If not, your shaft is on its way out. Check valve clearances and rocker end float. Adjust them to spec if they're out. Depending on mileage, it might be up for some head work. Exhaust valve guides on the R100s tend to get loose and wobbly early. You might check exhaust valve wear by shining a light down a plug hole and turning the engine over with the rear wheel until you can see the edge of the exhaust valve. If it's getting really thin, it's time for a head rebuild. Steering head bearings, paralever bearings, bla, bla, bla the list goes on.

We're cool as long as you're not a dirty corn dog smelling Cajun.
