Nor cal, So Or...SO Jefferson

Well, Coos Bay was our destination. They were having a big BBQ and brew fest and my friend is getting into BBq compititions so he picked the spot. It was my job to get us there on as many dirt/backroads I could find having never traveled any of the areas we were going.

We trucked to Mt. Shasta to cut out a ton of highway from home. We could of backcounty'd it but that would have added 2 more days. 5 days is hard enough to get with a job, wife and kids.

At Deans house in Shasta. 9am

Scott River. Sunny but cold

Fort Jones

This is above Happy Camp heading into Or. (Thompson Ridge)

Did I mention it was cold?

Bolan Lake. Or

Cool carvings in Cave Jct.

Grants Pass for the night.

End of 1st day. Neat country the whole way. Lots of small paved and incredible dirt dirt roads. Even hade to go through a few snow drifts. I'll put up some more in a few. Going to lunch with my girls.

Day 2:
Started out from Grants pass. The weather called for rain, but we got lucky and only hit a few showers here ant there.

On the Rouge

Above Powers Or. on a fun logging road. All roads, no dust, the whole trip!

Coming into Coos

Coos Bay

Fellow KTM'er

We eat well

End of day 2. We went through so much backcountry and found countless fun roads.

Oh, no pics but about 1 hour shy of Coos bay, Jason snapped his kick start lever in half on the xr. Done! We found a welder at an artic cat/ tractor dealer in Myrtle Point and he drilled and inserted a steel rod and welded her up. I't worked... For a little while. We made it to Coos at least.

Day 3:

We woke up and wanted to ride on the beach. So Jason goes start the beast and Snap-o-la. Big surprise I know. So the hunt was on. Me and Jamie rode to every bike shop and atv shop in town. Called Honda and they said no, nothing. We asked even if somone knows somebody who rides an xr, we'll make them a hell of an offer for thier lever. Nothing. About to give up, we ride out to the honda dealer. After talking with him for several minutes, he say's "well, lets just see the kick levers I got." He pulls out three and they all have the same splines and look similar. We buy the one that looks closest. Whalla. Not perfect, but it kicks. Now back to drinking.

The fest. Sorry not many pics. Too busy eatin and drinkin.

End day 3.

Day 4:

Looks like rain agian. We got lucky most of the time but got wet a lot too. BTW, the Klim windstopper gloves are the best piece of gear I've ever bought.

We finally got on the beach. Soooo much fun.

Then it got interesting...

We hit this FS road I marked on the gps. (Just like all the roads we hit) It's raining, fun little tight dirt road off 101 that is going to take us into Gold Beach. About 20 min into it we hit a road closed ahead sign. Now we have already went passed two of these signs on our trip so we have to go take a look. We ride on and come to...

No bridge, and no tracks that look like people cross.

I go first, nail it. Jamie second, nailed it. Jason.... not so lucky.

Jason dropped it in the drink, stalled it. It took us about 20 min to get er going again. Now we're wet.

Made it to Gold Beach. Sun was shinning.

Killer Fish n chips.

Hit Bear Camp all the way to Grants Pass. Not dirt but still fun

Sunny and warm in G.P.

Last night fireworks

It was G.P.'s big boat/river fest. Boatnik? I think.
End of day 4.

Day 5:

Rain is the forcast. No chance of missing this one. Rain would be the motto this day.

Our last leg takes us to Applegate res and on to Siad Valley. Almost the funnest road we have been on.

The road went on for, like, ever

Jason is stoked

This is Gumboot Lk. On our way back to Mt. Shasta

Did I mention it was wet?

The Headwaters of the Sacramento

End of day 5. 856mi. total
I cant wait to do it again. This is why I bought the 640. I cant think of a better bike right now. It did it all. Log crossings, nasty hill climb out of that creek, the beach, drifting dirt roads in 4th gear, even buzzing the highway. It did it all pretty well. I love that bike!

I'd say the funnest roads were Thompson ridge rd that left Happy Camp, Ramshorn was fun fast n rocky, that one out of Port Orford that was closed with the creek crossing, and the one from Applegate res to Seiad. There were so many fun roads that it's hard to remember them all.

Yeah Dean, the only snow we hit was comming out of Happy Camp going North. I'm thinking of a ride this weekend if your up for one. I've marked some way-back roads and am going to try to make it to Downieville and be back by dinner time. Next Saturday. Almost zero pavement. I'll text you middle of the week or so.

Yes it does. From Happy Camp go east on 96 for a few miles. Then North on a real good FS road that gradually gets rougher and tighter. It follows the ridge top all the way into Oregon. Awsome views. It comes out just South of Bolan Lake. If you look on Google Earth at Bolan Lake, you can follow the ridge/road into Happy Camp. A cool loop would be: This road and connect in Oegon to Applegate Res. and back down into Seiad. If I lived closer, I would do this loop often. It's very scenic and the roads are a blast.

Nice!

Looked like a fun 5 days, I enjoy the country around there. Too bad about the rain but it looks like you enjoyed some sun as well. I will be returning for another ride through Oregon down to Santa Barbara again this year. Great roads, nice people, nice towns, doesn't get any better for this guy!
