Broken down in France

Broken down in France
Me and my girlfriend have been traveling Europe on my 06 990 adv
We had torrential rain in the Pyrenees and the bike took a real soaking!
We continued on to Toulouse parked up for the night, in the morning the bike would not start! It turns over but will not fire up!
Had the bike recovered to Ktm dealer in montauban they hooked it up to diagnostic machine and it comes up with ECU fault
They tried another Ecu but still no joy!
Now say it needs a new wiring harness!
KTM France are shut until Wednesday due to some big meeting.
The long and short of it is by the time they get the harness and fit it holiday will be over!
I am trying to come up with a plan, one idea is to hire a van and take the bike to a campsite rig up a tarp and go through every connector with wd40.
Any ideas,
Would be appreciated

Get a hair dryer and try drying the whole mess out. (heat up all the electronics and wiring to dry it out.) worth a shot. had a Subaru wagon that after a rain you had to hit the distributor with a heat gun to dry it out. Good luck!

I was going to suggest posting on the KTM forum, but you already have. I'm trail riding down through France the next couple of days, but I only go down as far as the Dordogne, so can't even bring you a morale boosting biere!!

06's had a problem with the abs switch (replaced as part of a recall), mine sent the dashboard haywire after a good soaking, so worth aiming the hairdryer there. Hope you get it sorted soon!

Hairdryer sounds a great idea. As gloud says heat everything up, especially the switches including igniton switch. Either some water got in somewhere after you shut it down or had a bad effect after it cooled down (increased humidity). Could be a connector came apart as you manouvered the bike but I doubt if a wire in the loom decided to jump apart while you were asleep! Did it rain on the bike after you parked it? Did you dislodge something if you secured it or covered it? Did someone pinch a part off it?!

I don't know much about the FI system but is the pump running?

What about the side stand switch?

Info here about electrical issues. cpmodem talks about grounding the green-black wire from the gear selector switch connector to bypass the interlocks and give ignition.

I have to be in Monaco (550km away) for the F1 today,
So I will take a hire car the recover the bike Monday and try a few your suggestions, I will let you know how I get on!

It turned out it was the fuel quick coupling had become disloged. It had been fitted so that the metal release button was facing outward. When my tank bag straps were tightened they flexed the tank just enough to depress the button. Thi happened a few more times before I worked out it was the tank bag straps causing it! I managed to turn the connector to face reward and all was good!

Its usually the simplest of things--if it has a spark and the plugs are a bit wet then it usually runs!!

Reminds me of getting stuck in deepest Shropshire with one of the first BMW R1100S models--brand new!--it suddenly stopped. I could hear the fuel pump start and it had plenty of fuel--called BMW recovery. After checking the plugs the spark was good but the plugs dry--no fuel. At the side of the road we had the plastics off , the fuel tank off, inverted and the fuel pump panel out (on the inside face of the tank!)--it turned out that the factory had not crimped the fuel line from the filter correctly and it had blown off. We found a pipe clip and reassembled it all (having saved a bit of fuel despite inverting the tank etc). It started first time--under two hours to get it back on the road--those were the days !!!

Fuel problem

As far as the system knows its delivering fuel pressure as designed--it was just that fuel was not reaching the injectors--I don't think that there is any "diagnostic" that would have picked this up? one of those hard lessons like crimping a fuel pipe or stressing an electrical connector. KTMs are pretty robust in the electrical department.

Us KTM riders will have the last laugh when you drop the S12 on to it's side mounted radiators.....

I was impressed by the pic of you in the mud on road tyres though, bought back memories of doing the same on the 1150GS.
