Barely Alaska Ride - the KLRsys Shakedown Cruise

Greetings,

I've been lurking here on ADVrider since 2006, but just recently started posting.

Some of you may have read about my old riding buddy (KLRsys) and his "Frankenstein" conversion of KLR's using the motor and other goodies out of a Versys. If not, read all about it here. http://advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=797568

KLRsys is now working on a 3rd conversion and when complete the shakedown cruise will be significant. We plan to ride from my place in McKinney, TX to Hyder, AK and back. Our departure date is July 13th and we plan to spend 3 weeks on the road. Yes, if you viewed the above link you know KLRsys has a lot of bike building to do, but he assures me he will get-r-done!

Below is the first draft of our general route. If anyone knows of good sites to see or roads to ride, please jump in with suggestions. None of us has ever ridden in the Pacific Northwest or British Columbia, so we welcome any and all advice.

... or if you'd just like to see a twin cylinder KLR, throw a post out here and we'll see if we can meet up. All 3 converted KLRs will be making this journey so it will be a great opportunity to see both Gen I's and a Gen II conversions, and the evolution of each.

Thanks much!

--Willy

Sounds like a great trip on an interesting ride!

Drop me a line if you need a place to crash in Prince George. and I can also help with some off-highway routing from here westward if you're looking to throw in a bit more dirt and gravel.

Good luck with the trip planning - and the remainder of the bike build!

Thanks GISdood. We may take you up on the routing help, dirt is good.

And Willy, "Frankenstein" conversion?? I'm gonna put some scars on yours.

GISdood, we might just have to take you up on that offer but right now it's a bit early to say. There are 4 of us... and I snore! You've been warned!

As KLRsys said, the dirt and gravel info would be good! It's why we ride dual sports... yes?

Hah! That has more to do with the builder than the bike!

Bump.

We have received some input and have added Crater Lake NP and Banff NP to the itinerary.

Also, we are looking for places/roads along our basic route where we can do some off-pavement riding.

Any and all suggestions are welcome.

Grand Teton - Dirt & Gravel Roads???

Thought I'd narrow the scope of my earlier request.

At the end of Day 4 we'll be at Grand Tetons N.P. I found the attached map that shows the 10 best Scenic Routes in the Northern Rockies. We will be riding some of these, but was really hoping for some good off-pavement routes.

A little help from someone familiar with the area around Grand Tetons N.P./Yellowstone (Wyoming, Montana, & Idaho), would be invaluable, and greatly appreciated.

Finding dirt roads isn't the hard part, finding dirt roads with spectacular riding that don't end at a locked gate is.

If your going through Banff then heading south Id recommend taking the Dorrien Smith Spray Trail which is gravel down to Hwy 40. When you join Hwy 40 youll have pavement again until the last 100kms up until the Crowsnest Pass Highway. Then id head into Montana and ride the Road to the Sun Highway.

Judging by your map route, looks like you'll pass through Missoula or near it. If so, I'd be glad to meet and buy you a beer, it would be cool to see the KLRsys in person. Contact info in PM

I do believe we're going right through Missoula but I'd have to check with vtwinwilly to be sure. But if we do we'll send you a PM as we get close.

I'd be interested seeing the bikes too if you pass through Missoula. I've been following the conversion/build threads and it definitely gets the wheels turning about possible new projects! I have a shop/tools, tire changer, and a place to stay if you need it in Missoula.

Thanks for the generous offer. We always enjoy meeting like minded folks on our travels, gives us some local perspective of the places we travel through. I will PM you a few days before we get to Missoula or if it works better PM me your email or phone. What ever works best.
