Rick my friend, you have a serious SL350 addiction issue. The first step is admitting you have a problem. The second step is for me to figure out what parts I need and hit you up for them...

The next time I'm tempted to buy another SL350, perhaps I can give you a call, and you can talk me down from the ledge?

It's that damn garage: too big, too clean, too empty.

Something like that is just bound to cause trouble.

Just give me a call next time you get those urges and I'll go pick it up for you. (That worked for OC and he bought two )

OK, I'll admit it, I'm a member of "Honda SL350s Nonymous" as well, where our moto is:

Prepping for Elkton VMX

Camera decided to quit working, so just a quick update;

After a couple months of home improvement and honey do's, another race is on the horizon, the AHRMA VMX at Elkton, Oregon. Prepping the SL350 includes a tune up, valve adjustment and jetting as well as changing the forks and front wheel back to stock so the bike will qualify for AHRMA's NW Region ESS class. This is a new or experimental class designed to separate the early 70's bikes that are heavier and less refined from the faster and lighter 73 - 74 Maico's, CZ', etcetera. Hopefully it will make us a wee bit more competitive??

I wish I could make this one with you Rick. But, I get to pick up the kid from Tennis camp and then drive her to another one of her camps that weekend. Since you have lightened the bike so much, make sure you tie it down on the trailer extra tight...don't want it to float away!

Have fun.....I know you will. Let me know if you need anything SL related.

Going Backwards to Go Forward

Getting the bike legal for the lower class means putting on a heavier stock pair of fork legs and the bigger double leading shoe drum brake.

Pulled the wheels and forks off the racer and set those aside (disclaimer on picture quality, taken with my flip phone);

Pulled stock legs apart, thoroughly cleaned, replaced seals, reassembled and then mounted up on the SL;

Cleaned and serviced bearings and brakes and mounted wheel, on opposite side rim is pretty dinged up, maybe next year we'll put on some nice alloy rims??

Closer look at trick heavyweight wheel and arguably better brake then the little CR250 rim that was removed (we shall see);

Next it was on to the fuel system, the oe petcock never did flow very well and there was a little nicer valve on one of the parts bikes, it is a single outlet so I installed with a brass t, worked out pretty nice. Here is the valve still on parts bike;

Then it was on to putting in the new smaller jets, recentering the slide needles and trying it out. I'm now down to 150 mikuni hex jets in the VM30s and it still seems rich, plugs are not quite as sooty as before, so we are getting close. Luke is going to pick up some 140 and 145's tomorrow and we will try those out. If we can ever get the plugs even close to brown, we will start the finer adjustments.

Jetting the VM30's

Typical jetting process, have tried jets from 200 to 130, multiple needle positions, air screw adjustments, etc. Feel like we finally hit close to the right combo tonight with the following setup;

2.5 cut slide, 6F4 needle on middle clip, 25 pilot, 140 hex jet, 1.25 air screw, float at 24 mm and the most important thing, REMOVED the main air jets. Removing these itty bitty little air jets somehow changes the signal at the jet and for the first time since getting the bike back together was able to make a full throttle second gear start without bogging the engine. Will try riding and testing again tomorrow when fresh and thinking more clearly, but we are getting close.

Big thanks to Luke for the gift of a nice new front tire (and even mounted it for me), picking up jets and plugs and spending hours talking through the setups and lending moral support. Thanks brother!
