Romania & Austria - October 2013

We are planning a ~2,500 mile loop in Eastern Europe for mid October this year. Two up for twelve days. Mostly in Romania and Austria. Starting in Slovenia we will quickly cross Croatia and Serbia to the southern Carpathians. Spend four or five days in the central Carpathians (staying in Sibiu for a few days). Then head north and west, possibly through western Ukraine. Zip across Hungary. And finish up riding eastern Austria. Our last night will be at Bled, Slovenia.

We are making notes on things to see in Romania at this point. I hope to get in a ride on the Transalpina and Transfagarasan roads. It's possible that we will make the Austria portion short if Romania turns out to be just too good to leave.

As far as I can determine, our weather should be okay. A bit on the cool side.

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Heya,

I'm based in Vienna, let me know if there's anything you think I can help with.

If you've the time, and the inclination, ride the Adriatic (mostly Croatia) coast road, you won't regret it.

There's some great riding to be had in Slovenia; Vrsic Pass and the route from Tolmezzo to Cortina d'Ampezzo to name a couple. Riding in Romania is slow, you won't "zip" anywhere but the Transfăgărășan is worth the trip as, I'm told, is the Tranalpina.
