GSNorCal has a blue Honda rallye bike... but I know what you mean x

I wonder if Lyndon means 'building', or [just] re-building his new bike...?

Personally I can't see him trading in his stash of KTM parts just yet, but then a lot of people said that about Cyril Despres...

Don't think Lyndon really did a 2013/4 bike build thread but there are some details on his website http://www.lyndonposkittracing.com/blog/

He's currently out in Morocco ready for the start of the Merzouga Rally on Monday http://www.merzougarally.com/?page_id=4274&lang=en

But of course if you have a Rally bike, it would be a shame not to get a few pictures of it in it's natural environment

12 months on......

So here we are, the eve before the Dakar Rally 2014 and a whole 12 months since I was in Peru struggling to get any sleep before the start of the Dakar Rally 2013. Many people ask me how I feel not to be competing again this year and I have mixed feelings on this subject, none of which are disappointment.

When I look back, the decision not to do the race again was pretty straight forward for me although at the time it seemed really difficult. I was still paying for the 2013 race at that time and more fundamentally I had achieved my goal, in fact I had exceeded my goal in so many ways. I came away from Dakar 2013 with a top 10 stage finish, a 46th place overall and an awful lot of memories that can never be lost. Sure, I love to race and I would love to do the race again but the financial and time commitment required for the Dakar should never be underestimated. I spent a whole year of my life training, fundraising, preparing and getting to the Dakar 2013 and take my hat off to anybody that commits to it.

So whatís been going on in place of the big race? Well, from a rally point of view I competed in just one UK round which I took the overall win and then Merzouga Rally in Morocco. The rally in Morocco was fantastic in terms of the organisation, stages and navigation but it did not go quite to plan for me. Having got sick on day 2 of the rally I found myself without a result for something outside of my control, a true indication of the reality of rally racing and risk all Dakar competitors take. Iím pleased this occurred on Merzouga and not at the Dakar for sure! There is a circa 50% chance you will not finish the race, I consider myself to have got lucky in 2013, I prepared well and dodged or overcame the show-stoppers. Reality is, this is not always the case and Merzouga proved just that.

Besides the rallying, I wanted to find something as equally rewarding but with less speed and less expense and I welcomed the discipline of Hard Enduro or Extreme Enduro. Having spent much of my youth as a trials rider, the technical side of this discipline came flowing back pretty quickly and I soon found myself achieving things I never thought possible. I have not competed yet, I planned to do Romanics back in July 2013 but a short stint in hospital put pay to this. I like to free ride extreme obstacles, challenge myself and spend as long it takes to clean make it happen. Trying different techniques and different lines, body position and feeling for traction, itís a whole different technique to rally racing and I am really enjoying it. It is also very easy on my Carpal Tunnel suffering.

2014 Dakar Ė I have been following a bit of the pre-event discussions and in between all the chaff there are some really interesting things happening. This year is definitely set to be one of the most competitive at the front end for sure; many new bikes and some fantastic riders, all on competitive machinery this year. KTM (as always) look like they have got the package to do business but Honda have clearly invested a lot and also have a competitive package and with more redundancy than KTM or the other manufacturers i.e. they have more possibilities of a win or good results due to the number of top riders on their latest machinery. Honda clearly want to take womenís win this year also with Laia Sanz at the helm of the CRF450 Rally. Yamaha have clearly put a lot of effort into this year too, developing the bike a lot and although I believe their bike is a little more traditional in terms of development (modified MX bike) they have a strong engine and without doubt one of the strongest riders in Cyril Despres. Iím not putting my money on anybody as I believe there are genuinely at least 10 riders with a package capable of a win, letís just say itís going to be interesting!

As I sit here today, nursing serious Elbow pain as a result of double Tennis Elbow itís maybe as well that Iím not in South America. The doctorís and physiotherapistís advice not to ride came a bad time, with two weeks off work, what else was I going to doÖ..now Iím paying the price.

As always, Iím planning and scheming new projects, all involving motorcycles of course and I have a feeling that this year will produce some interesting reading for you all. I wish you all the very best for the New Year, make the most of it because itíll be over before you know it.
Lyndon
