I'll be 2-up camping in Big Sur on July 4th, around Prewitt Ridge. If you see a white GS, stop and say hi.

It's primitive camping up there, no reservations. I hope we don't have to fight too hard for a spot but it probably will be crowded.

That's the only way I like to camp. What night(s) will you be there?

We'll be there Thursday night for sure, we might head over to Escondido on Friday.

BTW has anyone taken the back way in to Escondido campground from Nacimiento road? How's the road (graded, rutted, etc.)?

I'm a little bit curious if he made it home with the new bike.

Sonora Pass ...?

Hi BAARC,

We have vague plans to ride from Lower Haight to Sonora Pass over the holiday ...

Here's a screenshot from--and a link to--inmate RockyRaccoon's Day Trippin' thread "Hell's Half Acre - The no-man's land between Hwys 4 and 108" ride report ... it's very useful, with an imbedded map you can zoom in on and some good pics and
compelling writing ... check it out, if you have not seen it!

And here's my map of the three-mile spur up to Leavitt Lake:

We're keeping our eye on the weather, and I've never been to either Hell's Half-Acre Road or Leavitt Lake, shown on the maps, which are a couple of reasons why the plan is vague ... I'm also not sure how crowded it will be around Leavitt Lake on a holiday weekend ... the goal is to get across the Central Valley heat and up into the Sierras to find cooler temps ... lots of scary thunderstorms in the forecast though ... if we can't find camping around Leavitt Lake (or can't make it on our loaded KLRs!) we'll find a campsite with a view off the dirt road that goes down to the Marine Base north of 108 ...

Anyway, if things go accordingly we'll be camping around Leavitt Lake on Thursday night, and seeing how lost we can get on Hell's Half-Acre Road after that ...

So ... clear as mud ...
We'll try to say "hi" if we see anyone else up there this holiday ... it'll be Cary and myself on first-gen KLRs ...

see you around the campfire,

John, here is a higher-elevation route between 4 & 108 that I like also.

Have FUN!

Hey Catfish,

Cool, thanks for the link to the wonderful route!

Here's a screen shot of your route and the lower elevation route below that:

Kind of fun to see where they link up ... we'd probably simply explore for a campsite before/after getting turned around by steep-rocky or water or getting hopelessly lost ... ha.

Hope you'll be riding over the holiday, too, Catfish!

see you around the campfire,

A group of us did the high elevation version of this route last October
on the Fall Colors ride. We were camping at Calaveras Big Trees.

Sounds like fun, but you're missing a SLEW of good roads!

Show me!!!!! I haven't riden much of the East Bay! So any advice is welcome!

Edit: the current route says there are private or restricted roads. Does anyone know if some of these roads are inaccessible?

Diablo is a waste and dangerous. The best roads over there are Mines, San Antonio Valley, Calaveras, Felter and a couple others but those are the highlights.

If you are heading to the Peninsula simply look on a map for a squiggly line. Literally thousands of miles there.

I might be heading up to Gold Lake on Friday, so I can't make this but seriously you can't go wrong anywhere on the peninsula. And if you are taking him for a ride in the Bay Area, you can't not have lunch at Alice's.
