Great RR so far. Good to see local boys on a trip like this, yea. You sure are passing a good time.

Do you have another bike in Redstick for tooling around locally?

I call shenanigans!

That can't be Louisiana. Rocks don't exist here.

Ogden-Tetons-Ogden July 2013 Day 1 Part 1

Inmates doing this loop: jakband, dwip and this writer ejtv to pick up bikes at storage in SLC; eh to trailer his bike from Denver.

Actual route per Zumo in grey: Salt Lake City storage unit to Ogden to Soda Springs to Palisades to Tetons, hike Table Mountain in the Tetons, then to Bear Lake to Ogden to Salt Lake City…Visited dirt in Utah, Idaho and Wyoming...

ejtv at storage unit figuring out what to bring, what to trash:

Inmates plus my daughter meet at Jeremiah's Restaurant in Ogden first Saturday in July early AM

from hotel in Ogden, gas station is up that way:

Ready to

First order of business, Skyline Trail. We will never get tired of this unbelievable trail, so close to Utahrds, so far away for cajuns and crackers…

Denver based eh gets a taste of primo Utah single track:

At the base of Ben Lomond we chickened out, again…last time the excuse was, it was late after a week of riding and we were tired. This time the excuse, it was early with a week of riding ahead and didn't want to spoil a week of riding…Here we are down the bailout route:

jakbrand and I took the wrong left turn and had to backtrack while everyone else waited at the trailhead. dwip busts his nose doing an endo, getting his taste of Utah single track too…I myself went off the trail on one of the switchbacks. I think jakbrand has pictures of my little sidetrack

Then it was on our way to Logan

A little reroute

and then Logan proper, gas and snacks...

...while we waited for jakbrand's shoemaker repairs to his Sidi's. You can't say he isn't resourceful, gorilla glue and drywall screws did the job:

Skyline Trail

is one of Utah's many singletrack treasures. ET is right, we will never get bored of Skyline Trail. Who could?

We captured many high country photos from this week long Independence tour across UT, ID and WY. I need to catch up at work today, but will post photos from Day 1 tonight.

Ride on!

Three guarantees

riders will experience on every tour we plan:

1. eat marginal food
2. sleep in substandard conditions
3. ride challenging terrain

One of these three guarantees usually induces a member of our party to punch-out early. All I can say is that four started and three finished.

Day 1 started without drama on spectacular Skyline trail.

ET from Baton Rouge with EH following

Dwipman from Florida

EH from Denver

Skyline Trail overlooks Ogden to the west and Huntsville to the east. The ribbon of singletrack runs across the ridges in this photo from the foreground to the highest peak in background.

I should have said,

not much drama.

ET strayed three feet off the trail and needed a hand pulling his overburdend bike loaded with camping gear and five gallons of gas back on the trail.

Hot weather

smothered Utah this day. Ogden recorded triple digits and the mountains were only slightly cooler.

More shots from Skyline...

The pavement was so hot

in Logan that the soles of my boots delaminated.

I repaired the delicate Italian craftmanship with beefy Cracker ingenuity.

Ogden-Tetons-Ogden July 2013 Day 1 Part 2

After refueling and a bit of pavement and gravel, we enter Richard's Hollow.

I think everyone but jakbrand ate some dirt in this section.

I on the infamous rock steps on Richard's when my rear tire slid as I tried to hop over it. Luckly the bike stayed on the trail. I did slide about 25 feet below the trail…As always tends to happen, when the trail gets tough, concentration increases and cameras stay off…so there was no photo evidence of the difficulties we encountered….That was the second crash of the day for me...Also as usual, I made sure I wasn't the last one on the "pace line"… dwip had weak link duty this time and helped me lift the bike back up…

Here's eh after a narrow bridge after a tight right hander. He did an endo and landed with bike upside down onto barbed wire...

And then successfully getting to the other side…

Here's dwip entering Steel Hollow:

And here we are camping at the end of Steel:

And the traditional campfire time and in which we share the trials and tribulations of the day enjoying jakbrand's cooking: boiled water over dehydrated Mountain House pouches:

Overall a phenomenal Day 1
