Alcona Michigan Trail Ride

As is the case for many of us, our riding days are severely limited by work, and family commitments. So when I had a day free I headed up to check out the Alcona ORV Trail.

This is an ORV trail that allows quads and side by sides, but luckily there was very little traffic (hardly any) for the 5th of July.

I left my home at 4:15 am, and arrived at the trailhead 7:15 am.

The trail was completed in 2011, and unlike other ORV trails, doesn't have much use.

A few shots from my 60.8 mile day.

Stopped by the Au Sable River for a look-see.

All in all had a really great day. 7 hours on the trail, and 60 plus miles in the dirt. Remember, a bad day on the trail is always better than a good day in the office...

Those looks like nice trails. What are the ground conditions? Hard pack or sandy in places ??

Ground is mostly hard pack with some light sand. Not bad for Michigan...

Looks nice! I've been wanting to do more trails on my big GS, but lower pennisula is usually very sandy which doesn't play well with a 500+lb bike. I may have to go explore those trails.

Ground there is certainly firm enough for the GS. My only concern is west of M-65 there are some short but steep elevation changes that may be a bit of a challange on a bigger bike. For my CRF250X, it was no problem, but a bigger bike will require some muscle. The good thing is it levels back out after the 4 to 5 mile mark west of M-65, then you can go all day long.

Plus the Alcona route hooks into other trails west of the Alcona area.

Well worth the trip.

However, I must say my favorite Michigan riding is still the forest roads in Manistee Ntl. Forest west of Cadillac along M-55 near Caberfae Ski area. Great riding there, and mostly hard pack.

Pic of one of the roads in the Manistee Ntl Forest. A great place to ride dual sport in Michigan.

You read my mind. I've been thinking about going over and riding the Manistee National Forest for a long time but just haven't made time for it. I've spent some time over there in Jeeps in the past and it's pretty nice. It just seems every time I'm planning a close-ish trip the UP wins out considering its only about another hour worth of riding to get to the bridge for me. Still, for a quick over nighter, Manistee would be great.

I actually grew up around West Branch though, and have never even explored any of Alcona at all. I didn't even realize there was trails there.
