Lifan 200 motor for the TLR200

Came across a Lifan 200 motor on Ebay which is advertised as a direct replacement for the TLR200. Obvious copy of the Honda design, they have reputations and some sources say they actually built these for Honda. Differences are it is a 5spd tranny and has electric start.

Anyone have any actually experience with this engine?

There's a Lifan thread over in Battle Scooters:

I was looking for a Lifan horizontal engine for a Z50 frame I came upon, but ended up with a Pitster Pro 110. The Lifan engines seem to be popular.

There was recently a ride report about some guys using Lifan 125 engines in Honda CT90's to build bikes to ride the TAT west to east. I believe they had a few problems but overall were happy with them. Being a "mature" rider with bad knees, having electro start would be a plus.

I'm pretty certain you can fit a Honda CRF230 engine into the TLR too (complete with e-start) - I've seen it done in the UK... that is another option and keeps everything 100% Honda?

Looking forward to seeing the evolution of your 'Trail' TLR - I love these little bikes!

The Chinese motors seem to be very well made for what they cost, and while the electric start motor wouldnt be ideal for trials use, it would be close to perfect for play bike or trail riding use.

The upright motors have been modified for use in serious TS trials bikes here in the UK, and more recently a bike has been built using a 140cc pit-bike motor, which seems to me to work better than most other TS bikes currently available.

The gearing in the transmission will be way off for a trials bike. I did a 75 xl175 with one. ran fine, for the street. (vibs at the top end ) but with the electric start it was nice. parts availability is ebay mostly.

I set up my TLR as a trail bike. I like the power delivery in the lower 4 gears for plonking along, 5 & 6 let me get from point A to B pretty easily on the road. The trials orientation of the steering is great for the trails I ride in the mountains. Electric start would be a nice option for a more "mature" rider.
