Rear drive - Water in oil?

The bike is a 2007 R1200GS with about 26,000kms (16,000 mi).

Had it serviced today. Mechanic noted that the rear drive oil was like "raspberry jam" as if it contained water. Said he'd never seen it like that. Noted that the bearing felt rough, but wasn't recommending replacement of the drive.

I bought the bike last fall and have put about 4000 kms (2500 miles) on it.

Anyone had a similar experience? I haven't seen any sign of oil around the boots or other signs of leakage. I've never driven it through the water, but I can't say anything about the previous owner's habits. What about salt water? No sign of pitting or rust that would suggest its been left under water!

It could be from someone riding it hard off road with a lot of rear brake usage. That can heat up the FD. Then riding through deep water. The temp change can draw water in past the seals. It isn't that common, but has been known to happen.

I question his comment that the bearings felt rough, but no recommendation to at least check them.

I've had water in mine, but after a water crossing. It was more like light coffee. Had to flush the rear drive a few times...5 times...before I got the the oil clear. I assumed it got in via the top vent (2012 GSA)

Could it be Redline Shockproof gear lube, and the mechanic isn't familiar with it's red/pepto-bismol pink color? That sure could shock (pun intended) someone who was seeing it for the first time.

Water in oil looks nothing like "raspberry jam" it goes a brown/whiteish colour like coffee as said above or mayonnaise like this:



This is actually emulsified oil.

If its thin maybe some muppet put ATF in if its thick as it should be its probably something expensive and specialised.

This is true. If the oil looks like Pepto, could be Redline. I changed a trans and FS like this recently.

Thanks for the replies. I picked up the bike and talked to the mechanic. I looked at a picture of the oil. Volume looked like more than I would expect for 180 cc's. The oil did look emulsified, and did have a raspberry jam color. He did note that there was absolutely no debris on the magnetic plug.

With no unusual sounds, or feel and no evidence of "destruction" going on, I took the bike and intend to use it without worry. Either something wrong becomes apparent or its ok. I'll change the oil next spring and see how it looks.

Now to figure out why the "brake failure light" won't turn off.

Sounds more reasonable.

If the fluid looked like this, you had RP in it.

I made up this FD snorkel to keep the water out. I did a few kits for 1150s. Not sure which 1200s have a breather. (I also use Redline Shockproof Heavy)
