I stopped by the Raleigh farmers market last week and had a late lunch at the NC Seafood Restaurant there. The fried shrimp and crabcake plate I had was almost as good as any place down east. I'll have to add this to my list of favorites.

Completely vegetarian but with a different approach.

Zali - Brazillian on Market Street in Greensboro.
This place is actually freaking good.

Will update more when I can think of some....

Haven't seen 'em mentioned yet, so:

The Depot at Cody Creek (east of Dobson); and Waldhorn german restaurant in Pineville.

Jaybee's hotdogs in Statesville has some good'uns.

Absolutely love Waldhorn.

For BBQ (and I mean real eastern NC BBQ) I'd have to say Cape Fear Chicken and BBQ in Fayetteville. For Burgers and Dogs, The Penguin in Charlotte was awesome but as mentioned above has changed ownership and is now just mediocre. For a motorcycle friendly joint, Lancaster's on Beaties Ford Rd in between Charlotte and Huntersville has some great BBQ beef brisket.

Just my 2 cents.

A few almost down east places worthy enough to mention.

The Spot Grill in Beaufort, NC - Great short order items and approved by locals and tourist lucky enough to spot it.

The Crab Shack in Salter Path, NC - Way beyond average seafood, great service and dining overlooking Bogue Sound. If you are in the Emerald Isle to Morehead City area The Crab Shack should be on your short list of places to eat.

El's Drive In in Morehead City, NC - Good burgers, fries and shakes. The shrimp burgers are what keep the place open though. Try one and see for yourself.

+4 to B's BBQ in Greenville, NC
+1 to Bill's Hot Dogs in Washington, NC-it's cheap too-less than $1 per hotdog when I was last there. Load it up with everything, extra chili.

Edit 7-23-13 I heard today The Spot is closed but has a new owner and they are remodeling.

Just found out that The Spot Grill is no longer in business. They have been in business since 1950. This sucks! The local CrackDonalds just around the corner is still open though slinging 3rd rate grub as fast as they can.

Speaking of Salter Path, across from the Crab Shack is the Big Oak Drive In. Freaking awesome oyster burgers...

The Fish Hook Grill in Harkers Island, NC is no longer open. Ms. Faye passed away mid-January this year.

The Spot Grill in Beaufort, NC is finally reopened.

Adding a new place to the list Four Winds Cafe in Climax, NC is a great little out of the way place for lunch or dinner. Check it out if you are in the neighborhood.
