Wowza!!!!!!

Looks like some okies have been having some fun traveling off to foreign exotic states and such...

Great report Woodzrider!!!! I'm heading to CO in September... you got me worried!

Anyone been following Shov3BR on his spotwalla deal? Diffidently not in Kansas anymore...I check a couple times a day, he's not in Alaska yet but way up north at the top of the Yukon Territory.

I've been taking this time to work on the bike, changed the oil, changed the coolant, and my K&N air filter was dirtier then i have ever let it get (I mean full dirty)! Still have a few more tweaks if it wasn't raining i'd get them done, then i'll be ready to ride...

Oh ya, i think Kiltedcrawford is out riding the OAT this weekend... Can't imagine riding some of those dirt roads in the rain... but i think he is out there somewhere....

When's the next hootenanny?

The Arctic Circle

We made it to the Arctic Circle (and beyond). We have been very fortunate with the weather. We had two days of rain but it has been sunny and dry for the ride up the Dempster. That's significant as the Dempster is treacherous when it's wet.

Here's some tidbits:

Into the Northwest Territories from the Yukon.

The Dempster starts here about 40 Km outside of Dawson City.

Dan motoring along the Dempster. The road surface varied from packed gravel that we could rock along at a comfortable 100 kph (60mph) to loose gravel which was squirrelly as heck to packed mud that was rutted but had good traction.

Eagle Plains, out in the middle of nowhere about half way along the Dempster and the only place with lodging and fuel between Dawson City and Inuvik.

The Arctic Circle! Dan (Tasmania) Geoff (Kiwi) me, Hugh (Aussie)

This gives you an idea of the road surface. Sometimes the loose gravel was all the way across the road. In other places packed as it is on the right side here.

A wee ferry takes us across the Peel River

Fuel stops are too far apart for the bikes range so filling along the way from cans is required. My RotoPax were much more convenient than packing fuel cans like Geoff and Dan had to do. We called Hugh's R1200GSA the Exon Valdez as he could supply our bikes if necessary.

The mighty Mackenzie River calls for a bigger ferry.

Inuvik, the end of the road. You can't go any farther north without getting wet.
Tomorrow we will turn back south and head back to Dawson City.
It's been a great ride so far. The Aussies and Kiwi are a great bunch of guys to ride with.
Cheers,
Shov

The Oklahoma Adventure Trail

Don't know how many of the city folks are keeping up with the Oklahoma Adventure Trail thread, but Kiltedcrawford just posted a report on the south/west section that is very interesting...

Just a reminder about three big factors in motorcycle disasters; fatigue, heat and dehydration. The motorcycle community lost another legend and her funeral is today. She lost her life on another long trip near the Barbor Motorsports Complex in Alabama. She is legend in the Iron Butt community, you can read some about her here http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=898572
I have made several long distance trips with her over the years when she was in her 70's. She looked pretty rough in the mornings, when we got on our bikes but as the day progressed she would sit up straighter and look more refreshed, I was just the reverse.
Her loss a few weeks ago really reminded me of how we push ourselves too far too often. That is why I am very observant about my reaction time and mental state as these big three wear on thru the day. I also spent a few months researching these same types of issues when I worked for the Air Force and these issues tend to raise their ugly head in an insidious way affecting reaction time and judgement.

Ardys Kellerman was part of our extended family when we lived in Austin Texas and a frequent visitor to our home in Idaho. We already miss her.

Got back to the States yesterday and your voicemail was waiting for me. Thanks for checking!

The Dempster took it's toll last Wednesday (or was it Tuesday) with 5 riders down including me and only two getting back to Dawson City unscathed. All riders are OK including one who hit a car head on. Lots of scrapes, cuts and world class bruised but otherwise OK.

The big issue was getting broken bikes back to civilization. I augered in just south of Fort McPherson and getting back was an adventure that rivals any I've had in my lifetime. I'll try to relate it in some detail when I get home later this week.

Thanks again for checking on my whereabouts.
Cheers,
Shov

I managed to land on the same side so the right wing is still good. Added some elbow damage but nothing that won't heal in a week or two. One world class bruise from mid forearm to shoulder. Decorative to say the least.
BTW - got home today so all is good. Now to get parts ordered for the Purple Goose so it is ready to take to the KTM Rally in September.
Cheers,
Shov
