I've been riding Mines and Calaveras for around 15 years and still see them as a challenge every time- but I can understand running out to the Junction and back getting old. If you head on out to Patterson or up and over Hamilton, there are another hundred or more miles of prime twisties. And if you go up and over Hamilton, that is a great segway over to the multitude of offerings on the Peninsula or south to Hollister and Airline and all that.

But then that's just what I think and what I'd do.
I can't stand the north bay but must concede there certainly are some nice roads up there. However you have to do them at insanely off hours to avoid deputy dog or the parade of moron cagers.

I agree with both points.

Perhaps my reluctance to promote Mines Rd. comes from not only traveling that road since before I could drive (To get to the snow and friends lived up there.) but it includes the knowledge that most of the ranchers up there willingly hog the lane with the understanding that their ranch trucks are much bigger than any bike they'll encounter. And the knowledge that my boss (Who built the big bridge at ~mile 15) has replaced his fence and picked up bike parts more times than he can count.

I am out n east bay, (so you'd gave to take 580 towards Livermore out of SF...but Mines Road is my favorite ride... (North Livermore road South off if 580...) make your way towards Lake Del Valle Regional Park, but turn left on Mines road befor you get there.. and great place Called the Junction..after 45min of beautiful roads.. meet the old husband/wife owners.. have a hamburger or pulled pork sandwich.. (and a cold beer if you dare..).. then on to Mt. Hamilton.. over the top.. (be careful tight turns and steep drops..), then down to 680... to get back to SF..

Fwy's blow around here, I'd suggest getting out at dawn, and getting out of town..

enjoy, be safe.

I did the ride to Santa Cruz, well almost all the way to Santa Cruz and stopped at Alice's for lunch. Thanks again for the recommendation! I may try heading toward wine country this weekend....

nice! glad you enjoyed. I had fun on it..tho didn't stop at Alice's.. next time.

re north bay.. my buddy lives in Napa, and from Napa, to say Bodega Bay.. there is great twisties.. just take a look on the map..I only kno from Clear lake .. south to Napa, i come that way from family in valley..), but from napa, you can go out (east) 121 to 128, then onto small road, "Lower Chilies Valley, turns to Pope Valley, this is a great route.. no cars, beautiful and fun..turns to Butts Canyon, then exits you into Middletown, (small place, but does have dive bar w good food on main drag.. then go south on 29, you see those squiggly lines, inside "Robert Louis Stevenson State Park? nice..then 29 on out..to either 37 to 101, coming into SF thru GG bridge, or 29 to 80, then Bay Bridge..

only thing.. that's wine country, and if your still up there trying to get back to city at 3-4.... not to great in an air-cooled GS.. traffic can be bad.. but go Sunday am at dawn, and u can be back in SF by 12n.. it's really nice up there..

Bodega bay and coast is good too.. but can be touristy too..

best,
HPR

Hey mbrick,

I think Catfish heads up there at least once a season ...
it's a pretty easy ride to do on your own from the Bay Area ...
we stopped at the ranger station on Hwy 4 and spent $20 on
Forest Service maps and had an easy time on fire roads ...

Catfish and Rob know a lot of single-track routes up there
(Calaveras Dome is one) ... here's a few more pics:

Water crossing on FRN02, down by Hell's Half Acre Road ...

Lunch on Calaveras Dome ...

So, Calaveras Dome is off FR7N09, just north of Hwy 4
near the Cabbage Patch Maintenance Station ...
miles of easy fire roads and--I'm told--single-track, too.

We found campsites at Silvertip Campground on Saturday night ...
the campgrounds close to Lake Alpine were full in Saturday ...
on Sunday night we found a campsite at the furthest
campground from Lake Alpine's east end ...

I met some very good riders, who had a ton of knowledge
about the area and were generous with
their riding time ... lots of fun ...

I'm heading back up there on August 9-11th to go to
Bungee Brent's Backroads Bash #6 in Long Barn, a 100 mile/day,
two day dual-sport ride based out of Long Barn on Hwy 108 ...
says roll chart is included, so I guess it's a roll-chart ride ...
I'm a map guy, so I think both roll charts
and gPs suck ... ha.

see you around the campfire,
