Pissed damn,,,rpm gauge does not work after short under tank

well my tank came loose when riding,it moved backwards and dropped ,,, it must have made contact somewhere, bike started to backfire and a red light came on, i secured the tank, but that short dammaged something ,,,my rpm gauge does not work anymore, the light on the gauge works, but the needle does not move , , , , first it still moved , but not accurate,,,but now its dead,,,,,, any thoughts / tips ?

It must the the tachometer cable being shorted against a muffler bearing. Do te turn signal work? If so, you might have also had a blinker fluid leak...

You don't say what bike.

On a bike with the 2 6V coils under the tank (5/6/7 up to '84) there might be one of the coil terminals (the one that is connected to the rpm gauge) shortened constantly to the tank. That would explain your rpm gauge not working. I am not sure whether the bike would run in case of a short.

You'll see arcing marks on the underside of the tank.

I'm going to have to agree with this. Or, the tank's inner fuel inertia relay was triggered into a false reading, so now your tachometer is receiving too much voltage.

Have you opened the tank yet to check this? There are seams underneath....































(please go to a mechanic, do not listen to me........)

an 81 r100rs, i dont have blinkers anymore, its a cafe racer,
i checked again , there was a short indeed, one coilwire touched the tank, gauge works again,,,,,glad it does, i bought that instrumentpanel only a few months ago ,,,

thank you guys,,,i was thinking it was inside the gauge burned up or something,,,, glad it works again
