You sure your volt meter is correct?

I find it hard to believe it ran all the way back to DE if it wasn't charging.

I didn't think the ECU or FI would continue to function once the voltage fell a few tenths below 12v.

Tom- here's a stator that lost a phase. Notice burnt area. Even so much as a small nick in the insulation on the winding(s) can cause problems.

New Mosfet Reg/Rectifier

All Triumph owners should keep one of these handy.

This is the kind of bullshit that keeps Triumphs from ever being great bikes.

Thanks for the advice. I will investigate further, in the meantime the KLR is my primary mode of transportation. Writing this response on a Surface at the best buy. Shopping for replacement for the broken laptop. Can I get used to a touchscreen keyboard? Hmmmmm

I will completely remove the stator and check for damage. And also check resistances. When I started her this morning the voltage was 12.8 V whether the bike was running or not running. This tells me that there was no charging going on.

Careful when you pull it out....pretty strong magnetism. Might try to "jump" out of your hand.

Let meask a dumb question, now from a galaxy note 10.1. Is there supposed to be some oil in the space where the stator is? I kinda like the touchscreenon the Surface tablet better

Yes, a small amount of oil....couple tablespoons, give or take.

Stator/rectifier Can't be completely dead or the battery would be deadern hell.

Thanks for the wisdom T. Something for me to consider just doing. Mine plays the same games as Tom's, but when it's running it's flogging almost 14V at the battery.

Damn Tom, glad it wasn't acting worse yesterday. No need to apologize...I don't have to fix it Good luck with the repair, it sounds like Mr. T has the right idea. Like Jack said though, if it were completely dead I don't think you would've been going anywhere.

Did you have to do this on your steamer Slo?

Only have 13K on mine and I have decided to go mosfet just cause, what good is a bike you cant trust to start EVERY time. Thanks again for the wisdom Mitta T> You da man.

Oh and Tom, if the battery is showing 12.8v after sitting, it has survived the torture of a malfunctioning charging system. Seems like you caught this thing early enough to save a tow.

Yes my voltmeter works.
I charged the battery overnight, volts now read 13.8, it was reading 12.8V after Saturday's ride, so it seems that the battery was not being fully charged. The battery is relatively new, bought in December 2012, a Bikemaster Gel. My tiger has HID headlights and and LED tail light - perhaps she does not use too much electricity in normal operation? Could explain why I was able to make it all the way home. So maybe the battery is better than I thought!

Bad thing is, when the stator goes it often takes the Regulator/rectifier with it. Go Mosfet if that needs replacing.

BTW: Rick's is pretty cool to deal with.

Wayne- The Tiger/Michaux curse has returned....
Stator and Regulator/rectifier ordered from Rick's this morning. KLR is now my primary mode of transportation!
