4 Days around Barcelona

My girlfriend and I are going to Barcelona September 5 - 16, we've rented a nice apartment in Barceloneta to enjoy the city (never been).

While there we are renting a Tiger 800XC from http://rentatiger.es for four days, Monday September 9 to Thursday September 12.

Our plan is to take a leisurely loop of Catalonia, first night in Andorra (at a Parador up a mountain), stopping at Montserrat on the way. The second day (early morning) we ride through Andorra before the tourists attack and check out Llivia and ride down to Ripoll and Olot (found a nice farmhouse to stay at near La Pinya), third day we ride through Santa Pau to Figueres and then to Cadaques, finally on the last day we ride back to Barcelona, stopping at Girona. The rough route I've mapped out is shown below.

Posting to welcome feedback, suggestions. Maybe someone local who wants to day ride part of it with us, and just general general input and ideas to enhance our planning.

You'll enjoy Montserrat - I was just up there and in Barcelona this summer

Be sure to take the cable car at Montserrat to the top and back down - the views are great. The Black Madonna is the big deal inside the monestary. The line is very long to get right in front of her - she's the patron saint of pregnancy, or so the story goes.

Check out the Olympic Village downtown

Nice choice on bike rental agency - IMT Bike also runs an office there, highly recommended.

Go online NOW before you go and get tickets to get into Sagrada Familia. The line there for "walk ups" is around the block and takes forever. There is a special gate for internet ticket holders and you walk right in. Get a tower pass too - it's worth it. Be sure to go - it's the Eifel Tower of Barcelona.

Of Italy, France, and Spain, Barcelona was my favorite.

Actually was looking to ride the bike up there and then go out the back way of Montserrat.

You can ride the bike (or drive a car, bus etc) to the Monestary but not up to where the cable car goes.

But, you can always walk up there and back down.

Hi,

That's a nice trip although i always recommend folks avoid Andorra altogether as it really is a hole! An alternative Parador is at La Se d'Urgell - it's said to be one of the best, located in the cloisters of the Romaneqsque cathedral there.

Your route looks fine but for one section: it's difficult to be sure with this view but it looks like you're going to join the C14 at Col de Nargo before you head north towards Andorra. This is quite a horrid road and actually very dangerous, not least because of the heavy tourist traffic.

You have a fantastic alternative by looping west up the L-511 to isona, then on to Tremp and La Pobla de Segur where you join the N-260 trans-Pyrenean route back to La Se d'Ugell via Sort. This will take about two hours - but if you trade this against the hour or so it will take you to wind up into Andorra then you're evens :)

Enjoy.

Simon
