First tow! 07 990 ADV



The deets:
Bike been sitting for ten days off the charger with a Shoria battery.
Started right up in the AM and rode off to work with heated jacket and grips on to stay toasty.
I have a Shoria indicator light on dash that montitors the bat out put and it was fine all am.
After the first stop I turned the heat off on everything and spent the next 3 hours on errands starting and stopping the bike without issue.
I stopped for lunch and as I was parking I put the kick stand down before putting into Neutral so the bike killed... no biggie I parked it.
I did leave the GPS on and plugged into the bike and it draws very little but was on during my 45 min lunch.
Went out turned the bike on, It did the normal startup thing like always but the start button wouldn't kick the starter. Little click noise in the cowl or at the switch but no starter action.
The monitor light was in normal operating range and light where on and not dim.
Tried to jump with MC Tow company with no luck.
HAD to bring it in to the shop, cause it was closer to home.

What say you all?

I know all fingers point at Batt but we couldn't jump it either.

Those Shorai batteries dont die slowly. They tend to pretty much just up and quit.

If the battery is actually good, then regulator could have gone out. I think they have been more of a problem with the 950's, but the 990's are now getting older as well, so that could be it.

Its also can be difficult to jump start if you don't get a good connection to the posts.

Did you try to bump start it?

Bump start

Crash!! how the hell are ya! Thanks for the input! I did not try to bump start it. I was in San Fran but not on the right street.

This is my second Shoria and the thing is, it seams to have plenty of juice, and the fact that I couldn't jump it wit a jump pack. We tried the posts and the jump start post on the right side under the skidder. If it was a truck I would go straight for the starter or starter relay...

I would suspect starter relay, if your starter is not working.

These tend to die with no warning. Is your starter working?
R/R wouldn't come in the equation as far as the battery can power up the electronics; until it gets empty that is. But your battery is still healthy...

Check the fuse for the starter relay.

Also, and this is just me, I am not crazy about the Shorai. I had one replaced because it "had a bad cell" and another that seemed to cook itself on a trip last year. I don't think they like the cold or the heat, so I would think SF/Marin would be perfect for what I consider to be a tempermental battery. Others love them and have had no issues, maybe i am just unlucky? However my first battery (stock Yuasa) lasted well over 4 years, and it was NEVER on a trickle charge and the bike lives outside most of the year even in winter. I went back to a Yuasa.

Check voltage drop

Check voltage drop on the battery, both with the key off and then when you press the starter button. If I recall correctly, if the voltage drops below 11.0 volts the atarter circuit is inhibited and cannot engage. Had that happen when the stock battery started to die off.

I have also had the issue with the starter relay circuit is as well. Found the terminals corroded , water crossings with no grease on the terminal will do that. Once the terminals were clean, no more problems.

Shorai

These batteries need 14.6 or higher voltage to fully charge whether from the bike's stator or charger. Resting voltage for an 80% charge is 14.6 volts. Much below 14 volts they are dead.
