Bullwinkle 2013, eh? Six days in ME and New Brunswick

This report is to log a 6 day trip my brother Brad and I are doing starting and ending in Vasselboro, ME. We are following the same route more or less as DockingPilot did through New Brunswick in his 2009 Big Duellie Ride. The ride is mostly dirt roads and some connecting slab.

Aug 29th - Boston to Vasselboro, ME (trailering)
Aug 30th - to Saint John, NB
Aug 31st - to Moncton, NB
Sep 1st - to Miramichi, NB
Sep 2nd - to Serpentine Lodge, NB
Sep 3rd - to Houlton, ME
Sep 4th - to Vasselboro, ME then to Boston by trailer

We still have a lot of prep work to do to the bikes....stay tuned.

A quick shout out to the New Brunswick Dual Sport Club guys...they have been awesome giving us help and info.

Route

We are going counter-clockwise from Brad's camp. Looks to be about 1210 miles total in 6 days on mostly dirt...not too bad.

Quick update on prep...

Quick update so far. I have two DR650s (2000, 2002). My brother Brad is riding the 2000. We had a blast doing the puppy dog last year with my other brother Ron so decided to expand the ride this year. Ron got in a very serious motorcycle accident late 2012 so he is sitting this one out and we'll miss him immensely.

My primary bike, the 2002, decided not to start a couple weeks ago and the 2000 has a leaking chain tensioner gasket. I found the problem on the 2002 and replaced the pulser/pickup coil....after about 2 hours of scraping petrified gasket and soldering the new coil to the existing wires, I got that bike running. I also replaced the tensioner gasket on the 2000.

We decided to transfer my e-bay racks to Brads bike and give him my existing Nelson Riggs soft luggage. I'm upgrading to Wolfman racks and Seahorse panniers (SE-720, equiv to the Pelican 1520s). I'm also switching to Shinko 244s front and back to replace the Bridgestone TW301/302s I have. That lets me go to the wider rear tire and replace the front TW301, it really sucks in the pig snot.

Brad is blasting, plating, and powder coating a couple of parts (oil cooler gaurd, rear grab handles) for the 2000 to spruce it up.

Update on the update...

I'll be riding along with Scott. Having done the PuppyDog in Mass and Vermont last year of only 3 days, this ride will be twice as long and twice as much fun I'm sure.

I'm contributing to the prep work on the bikes by having a couple parts blasted, electro-less nickel plated and then powder coated as a final finish. The electro-less nickel will coat both the inside and outside of the tubes (for ultimate rust resistance) while the black gloss powder coat is the final color and finish we're looking for. Most likely a little over-kill but more is always better, right?

I'll post some pics of them this weekend.

Seat Concepts seat
Plastic re-installed with new hardware
Side Racks - plenty of spacers required
Air Filter cleaned, oiled and re-installed

Scott still has to change tires on the 2002 and some miscellaneous other stuff, but we're getting close - only 3 1/2 weeks to go

Thumb Working hard to get ready...

Man, the rack and oil gaurd came out sweet. Better than factory! Thanks Brad!!!

2002 after fixing the pickup coil.

2000 after fixing the chain tensioner gasket

2002 all done except for tire mounting!!! Liking the Wolfman racks but I used about 5 lbs of spacers to get it to work. Love the new Seat Concepts seat kit.

2000 all done!! We added the Seat Concepts Tall kit....notice the thickness compared to the 2002. I got this bike for $1500 from a mechanic in Maine....sweet deal there.
