Mission: Dug Bar Two Up & Loaded
Every so often when looking at my maps my eyes would wander to Dug Bar Road - one of three roads that descends Hells Canyon to the Snake River on the Oregon side. It looked remote, and amazing. Some research turned up a few RRs, some warning against taking a big bike there, others having no problems. So I had to know: could we do it two-up and loaded?
Here's a quick RR of a nearly week long exploration of Central and Eastern Oregon. (Skip to Day Four for the answer!) Warning, lotta pics.
Day One - Portland to Prinevile
Route: 84 E, 97 S, 197 SE, 218 E, Cold Camp/Divide/Trout Creek/McKay
All packed and ready to roll.
No pics from the start of the ride. Even though 84 is one of the most scenic super slabs around, we ride it a lot so it wasn't particularly picture worthy.
Sherars Bridge Highway is always awesome though:

218 into Antelope. Great switchbacks:
I've heard Antelope described as a living ghost town. Sounds about right:
Finally, some gravel! Cold Camp/Divide/Trout Creek are awesome.

Trout Creek Road:
Spent the night at the City Center Motel in Prineville. Great old style motor hotel, clean and cheap. Plus they have "ICE"
Day Two - Prineville to Ukiah
Route: 380 E, 67 E, 63 E, FS 6370 NW, South Fork John Day Backcounty Byway N, 26 W, 19 N, 402 E, 395 N

318 to Post, the center of Oregon is a great road:
We missed our turn North and were happy about it in the end. Got some bonus FS riding back to the S. Fork John Day Byway. FS 6370 is great:
As was the Byway. 50 miles of easy off-piste riding, including a great stop for a swim:
Tanked up in Dayville (non-ethanol 92!), then up 19:

Rolled into the Ukiah-Dale campground late.
Day Three - Ukiah to Joseph (via Cornucopia)
Route: NF 52 (Blue Mountain Scenic Byway) E, 86 E, Cornucopia Rd N, FS 39 N
Met some nice fellow GSers in the morning, then gassed up:
Rolled into Baker City and it was HOT. Grabbed lunch, and hit up the Oregon Trail Interpretive site on the way out of town.
Riding along the Lower Power River Valley was fairly scenic, and really hot. We wound our way up to the ghost town of Cornucopia where I promptly stripped out of my gear, made coffee, and made myself at home:
Getting into the trees on FS 39 was a relief, and a really fun, twisty road. Spent the night at the Indian Lodge Cottages.
Day Four - Joseph to Dug Bar
Imnaha Highway N, Dug Bar Road
Lower Imnaha and Dug Bar lived up to the hype 100%:
It was hot. At one point I looked down to make sure my feet weren't on fire.
Saw some critters:
Dug Bar road is 95% mellow. However, about 1.5 miles from the end there is a section that's a little steep, full of loose golfball/softball sized rocks, and some rather sharp turns.

Okay, so after one particularly hairy section, I asked my pillion to walk for a bit. Of course, the road mellowed out directly after that, and it felt even easier standing and with my bars tilted:
We had the place to ourselves. When I got down there I immediately stripped and jumped into the Snake.
The night was warm, nice stars, and only a few rattlesnake and black widow encounters.
Throughout the night I had a little trepidation about getting up the technical sections with my pillion in the morning. My goals for the day were:
Day Five - Dug Bar to Pendleton
82 W, 204 N, FS 31 W, FS 32, W, Bingham/900/Cayuse Rd W, Kanine Rd N, 84 W
I'm happy to report that we achieved all seven of my goals!
It took us three hours to get down to Dug Bar from Imnaha, but only two to get out. I attribute this to increased confidence after clearing the loose sections with ease, and having aired down even more (25 front / 30 rear).
Saw this tiny graveyard on the way out:
We read in the local paper about a bar in Wallowa having burnt up. Saw it later that afternoon:
82 was hot and windy, so we snuck back into the forest on 204. Then we connected to Cayuse Rd via FS 31 and 32. Great riding.
Kanine Ridge Rd might have been my favorite of the day, mostly because I didn't think it would be as gorgeous as it was. We hit it at the perfect time of day.
The road goes through the Umatilla Reservation.
Day Six - Pendleton to Portland
Route: 84 W
Breakfast at the Rainbow Cafe in Pendleton:
I think one or two plates have been here before:
Spur of the moment trip to the Pendleton Woolen Mill factory for a tour! I can confirm that a Pendleton blanket can fit in a Zega Pro topcase.
84 West was extremely windy and we pushed it hard home, with a quick coffee stop in Hood River.

Love that road down to Dug Bar !!
Good onya doin it two-up, it's more fun solo and FAST tho...camping at the bottom seems like something I might hafta do someday

Thanks for the rr. Day hike to Pine Lakes from Cornucopia is spectacular quick access to high Wallowas. So many fun twisty roads to explore in Blue Mtns. Check out "Selling Your Father's Bones" for different perspective on history. Great photos.
