Grass Valley. Sometimes snows, but usually just only inches and just sticks around a couple days. Heard a couple good things about the campground at the fairgrounds but I don't know from experience. Skiing's close, city is close, ocean's not too far, dirt is kinda available depending on what you are looking for. 7 hours to Bend. Long couple days there and back, but doable.

That's what I am talking about, never heard of Grass Valley, I'll check it out. Thank you so much Hobbes!

Little Grass Valley Reservoir

Last weekend I took the bike up to La Porte for some riding. It was perfect weather and I found some awesome logging roads to traverse.

I've recently got into hammock camping. This was my first time taking it out. I absolutely love it and will never go back to a tent.

The ascend

I made it 8 miles up this road before encountering this beast; it was time to turn around.

No that's the great thing about it, it can be used as a bivy if there's no trees. It's heavy at around 4 lbs., so not good for backpacking. But for car/bike camping it's great.

Bummer about the fire on Deadwood Ridge. I know a lot of inmates on this thread have ridden up there.

News report said one "mining structure" has been destroyed. I'm not aware of any headframes or ore bins out there, so I think they must have meant that creepy old cabin just a half mile short of the historical townsite. That means the area around the townsite and cemetery has burned. Probably the whole ridge, all of the posted claims, that trailer where the weird guy lives on the way out, I think it's star city on the map.

Yankee Jim's canyon isn't the same after the fire, same with the upper Foresthill Road area after the dry lightning fires of 2008.

BTW Brieninsac, I remember when you posted your covering thread on the KLX forum, looks cool.

Edit: I was thinking of Last Chance. Deadwood Ridge, I wasn't aware there were any structures out there at all other than the old town cemetery.

Guess it is that barn-looking structure at the LC site? Didn't look particularly historic to me, but guess it was.

Good updates and map here: http://yubanet.com/nevada/American.php

13,000 acres, that's coming up on 20 square miles. Lots of nice riding out there that's not going to be the same for quite some time.

I'm going to head out there for a recon when the roads are re-opened but it sounds like that is a few weeks away.

I'd be interested in riding up to Last chance after the fires. Does anyone know if you can camp their?

^^ There's campgrounds (water and toilets) at French Meadows and Hell Hole Reservoir, and Robinson Flat at the end of Foresthill Road, where Soda Springs road starts. And you can dispersed camp anywhere if you're self contained, and have the nerve to sleep in a hammock in the forest with just the bears and cougars to keep you company.

While I'm on the subject of lamenting bummers, I rode Soda Springs road a month ago to get to the train tunnels by Donner, and discovered the locked gate which was installed last fall. There's another thread on this forum where the OP stated that the tunnels were locked after ONE wheeler got his rig stuck on the tracks at the other end.

I was in the tunnels once only, last spring, and only went about a mile in before I turned around because there were a couple of guys in 3/4 ton trucks kind of going nuts and driving fast in there and I didn't think it was too safe to be inside on a motorcycle on that particular day.

I'm going camping at Calaveras Big Tree State Park in a few weeks. Does anyone know of some cool places to ride while I'm their?
