"...Hours later, a 47-year-old man died in a Midtown motorcycle accident on the FDR - the fourth biker fatality in the city in three days, cops said. The man lost control of the cycle and hit a divider at East 34th Street an FDR Drive about 11 a.m, police accident investigators found."

do you think they have random mandatory profiled chainsaw "inspection" checkpoints as well as motorcycle checkpoints? do you think i'd catch any flak for walking around the city with a running chainsaw? #temptedtotry
Was it a locking blade? NYC Admin. Code prohibits them.

By the way, switch blades are legal to carry along with a fishing, hunting, or trapping license, while you're doing any of those things. Look it up.

Unless I'm missing something their sale is prohibited but not their ownership?

Also unless I'm missing something, anyone eating at an outdoor cafe could be in violation.

Or maybe I just need more sleep. What say ye?

I was stopped a few years ago for having a Spyderco Delica knife poking out of my back pocket. The way it was explained to me is what are illegal are so-called gravity blades, blades you can open one-handed that lock open, and have to be unlocked (say, with a liner lock) to be closed. So, the old Case knife currently nestled in my front pocket is fine, but that Buck Redpoint you saw in the catalog ain't.

That being said, I do know of fellas who have been stopped with larger knives who claimed they needed them for work (one guy was a butcher) and the cops let them go.

Key phrase there is using them for work. If they ever ask, never say you carry for self defense, that's a sure way to earn an arrest or desk appearance ticket.

NYC code also does not allow for knives to be visible. Cops will arrest or ticket for even the pocket clip showing. They also will do the same for a knife that they can open with the application of centrifugal force. They can usually take a loose lock back like a Spyderco and flick their wrist to open it. Now you're charged with possession of a gravity knife, that's serious.

Interestingly balisongs are legal, and cannot be considered gravity knives in NYC. I have a 3" Benchmade which is theoretically completely legal except for one little detail in the statute that says "or any dangerous knife," effectively putting the matter entirely within police and judicial discretion. I don't bother carrying in NYC. I'm more afraid of police than of the criminals.

Switchblades are banned from sale (and maybe even possession) in the united States under Federal law.

Good luck even finding one, and if one is found on you I guarantee you're not walking away with it, fishing license or not.

I got stopped for having the clip and butt of the knife poking out of my back pocket. I'm not sure I want to think about why the cop was looking at my butt...
I was honest with the officer, and he was honest and respectful to me. He gave me the lowest infraction he could think of, since I was being so polite. I think I had a court appearance and a $25 fine.
And I used to snap open my Spyderco one-handed all the time. Loved the sound it made!
Nowadays I just carry a swept-hilt rapier and main gauche.
