It is easy to find a gear ratio that works for trails and highway. The other bonus is with FI you don't have to fiddle with needles and carbs when playing in the mountains. Some people like that, some don't.
Stock they are about 71 pounds apart. I run a bit heavier than that with a skid plate, a rack, a 4.9 gallon tank and loaded enduro saddle bags and tail bag. I dropped about 8 pounds with a muffler change but everything else was an addition of weight. I might be at 380 with just the tools, tubes etc that stay with the bike and a days worth of water.

I left the DRZ at Bob's Cycle Barn to have new fork springs and a rear shock spring installed that will keep me from bottoming out. I think Suzuki expected a 140 pound kid on this bike, not me trying to keep up with a KTM 50. I also have a Corbin saddle on the way to keep my bottom happy on the paved sections!
Wow! And with the weather being so nice you could not have asked for much more. Happy Birthday, Eddy.

JEEZ it's been busy!

I got home after burning 1200 miles of interstate in 36 hours. I've learned a couple of things:

-Sintered brake pads on the rear make a mess of everything.
-75mph for 1200 mile is REALLY hard on a chain.
-I still don't care for Chicago.
-I should never ride a motorcycle in Ohio.
-After watching moonbeemers vid, I need me some dirt.

I had to choose between the GS challenge and the Shen500. Next year it's the 500. You guys have fun.
I've edited together a vid from my trip but I can't seem to get it to work right using Picasa. Any advice out there?

I have used Picasa to host videos but I don't remember doing anything remarkable. The site is meant for photos and not videos, but it worked for me on my imac using media coming out of imovie. I just dragged the icon of the video from the desktop into a Picasa upload photos page. If you don't have music that Youtube will remove maybe just put it on Youtube.

I will probably do that but I will want to do vids with music and was hoping to avoid YouTube. Thanks.

Wanted to post one more time to see if anyone else is doing the Shenandoah 500 and wants to split a site? Haven't heard anything solid from anyone yet. Thanks!

All right, I think I have a video to share, The audio is pretty much worthless, so mute it.
I had a great trip and highly recommend route 250 through WV. Ohio and Michigan were dull. The ferry ride was memorable (first time I ever had to strap the bike down) and I found some cool riding in Wisconsin, where I ran into some roadwork (about 5 miles of slick dirt then fresh graded gravel). The large lake toward the end of the vid is part of the Mississippi river and that stretch of road (Wisconsin 35) is nice. The weather was great the whole time.
That being said, I’m glad to be back in VA where the riding is superior. I’m looking forward to slipping some TKC’s back on and hitting some mountain dirt.

Nice vid. It is always great to get out of the state and see new things. There are so many great roads across America.

I recognized the Route 2 footage just west of Sandusky toward Port Clinton, Camp Perry and the Powerplant.

How long did it take from Church Hill to Sandusky? From the video it looks like 2 days.

Had a very nice weekend of riding.

Enjoyed the gracious hospitality of one Splitlanes. -Thanks again Ryan and Faith

Spent Saturday at Taskers with my wonderful wife. Wow she can ride, I had forgotten how good of a rider she really is.

The wife on her XR100 playing on a "Most Difficult" Trail / Boulder field

The KTM ate it up

Beautiful day and trails

Hopefully Smugmug will finish processing my video so I can post that.
