Question Crap condition TS400, what to do with it?

I got hold of an early TS400 in very sad condition a few weeks ago.

It's missing the tank and seat, has a lot of rusty bits and a cracked frame that has been welded, and then a drill bit was welded over it to act as a brace.

The forks are rusty and the rear wheel has a bead of weld running around the hub for some reason.

Motor seems OK though.

I had intended to use it for VMX but I'm having second thoughts the more I look at it and the more I read about the TS and TM400s.

So I thought I might ask you guys for some advice...

I have been toying with the idea of dropping the engine into a more modern frame, and using it for organised trail rides in the area that don't need a registered bike, but the low exhaust might be a problem, and I also wonder about the kind of power it makes (I'd like a tractor of an engine rather than a screamer).

The other option is fit a tank and seat of something else to get it rideable and get rid of it...

So they are my three options I am thinking of, so what would you guys suggest?

I had a look at the TS when I got home and I think I can rule out putting the engine in a different frame.

The front sprocket is so far forward the chain tension would be stupidly loose if I went to long travel suspension...

There's a good difference in powerband between the TM and TS. The TM uses a much lighter 'porkchop' crank and button magneto - a lot less mass. The ignition setup on the TM is much more peaky, with less grunt down low.

The TS has a full-circle crank and wrap-around flywheel with the lighting coil. It makes a bit less power, but there's nothing 'sudden' about it. Even with the TM magneto, the powerband remains broad. The TS porting is also much more tame, but that's an easy fix with the tools and knowledge.

Many moons ago, I roadraced a heavily-modified TS-400 locally. It was never really "fast", but so lightweight and forgiving to ride, that it was a lot of fun on a short, twisty, rainy track with Metzeler tires on.

I am kinda looking around for a TS400, I have a Maico AW250 frame just going to waste, see where I am going with this

So all I want is the motor and electrics, with 17's on it might be a hell of a bike on the dragon, probably have a lot of fellow old farts following me just to sniff the two stroke exhaust

May I suggest looking for a Suzi PE-400 engine, or a Yamaha IT-465/490 instead? Lots more power, newer engine design, and you'd still get the lighting coil.

I'd often thought of making a fun Franken-bike out of a 250 Ninja or RZ-350 chassis with one of those powerplants. The handling and torque would make for endless grins.

One reson I was going with the TS 400 was the fact it mixes the gas and oil for you

Well it sold on eBay about an hour ago, so I guess that's what I'm doing with it.
