Day 16 I got a room at the Circle R motel. Nice folks, & TAT friendly. Make sure to ask for the 'cash discount' :) I met Lex, who has a welding shop, I came up with a couple ideas to stiffen the mounts, & so far its been working ok. I thought about some round stock going over the top, but the problem there is that the fender needs to be a little sppreadable to get it over the mounting bolts. I enjoyed a break day in Salida, ran into a few guys from ADV, washed some clothes, and the fireworks that were postponed from the 4th of july due to a fire ban. Also had dinner with Duke & Tammy at a pretty cool local place with lotsa weird stuff on the menu. I took off the next day & hit Marshal Pass, it was pretty easy. I got to the top, thinking I had done something, and met Kelsey, who is riding her bicycle on the continental divide trail from Canada to Mexico I got to the town of Sargents, it was mid afternoon, but I didnt know what the road would be like to Lake City, or if I would get there by dark. They have cheap cabins here, & I shared one with Kelsey when she showed up, and another guy on the CDT named Mike. sights around town, except for the ford trucks, it reminded me of the small towns in Siberia. well, in Siberia, all of the rabbits would have been eaten.... lots of mining memorabilia everywhere sunset

DAY 17

The ride over to Lake City wasnt to bad. The problem with the maps is you dont know the condition of the road until you are on it.

and it can change. really fast, with no warning.

the peak in the distance is 14k feet hi. Which seemed really tall, until I realized I'd been 1500 feet

higher in the Pamir mountians in Tajikistan on the Dirtster

Lake City is nice, Duke had told me about Ravens Rest hostel, so I spent the night there.

Lucky who runs it is a really nice guy, and we had a good time BS'ing.

sights around town

old whorehouse. closed for business tho :(

At the Hostel, under the sign, you can see Cody the dog with a ball, waiting for me to throw it again.

If you stay there, you have to throw the ball. Its Cody's rule.

DAY 18

This is the day I have been dreading, well, not dreading, but apprehensive about.

Cinnamon Pass.

Ive asked 10 people about it, & gotten 10 different replies.

Well, guess I just gotta go see the varmint for myself.

Leaving Lake City, I went by the place where Alferd Packer killed & ate some prospectors.

I then whent towards the pass, on the Alpine Loop, which they claim is the roughest, highest 65 mile drive in the US.

good thing I have 4 inches of ground clearance! I probably couldnt make it with only 3.5!

When I saw how calm & peaceful this lake was, I should have known it was an ominous warning for the horrors that lay ahead...

the road started out nice, Im thinking that its not so bad...

then a few rocks. Rocks? these were boulders, buried in the road.

then there was this one.....

I tried to get over it a few times, even thru some dirt down where the sidecar wheel kept hanging up, but it just wouldnt go.

Luckily, there was a tree ahead that I probably wouldnt be able to pull down. So I hooked up the winch.

well, that wasnt so bad!

So I continue on, like the stubborn idiot that I am.......

I came up to this sharp turn with an uneven rocky uphill.

I tied it a few times, but it just wasnt gonna make it.

So..... out comes the winch. Some ATV'ers stopped to watch the fun and take pictures.

I can just see it when they got home. 'look at the pictures of this dumbass taking a Harley over the mountains!'

this took ahile, as I had to winch it in 2 stages.

Adventure riding is FUN!

Finally, riding again. And now it started to rain. and thunder, and lightning.

Am I past all the bad parts? oh no!

I hit this rock with the sidecar frame, which knocked it loose so I could remove it

around a bend, & another big rock. I couldnt get a running start at it. I tried a few times.

I threw some rocks down to help the hack wheel, but it was slick from rain.

A jeep came by & asked if I wanted a pull, I said I'd try it one more time.

I hit the gas, slinging gravel, & went up & over. I dont know if all 3 wheels were airborn, but it felt like it.

The jeepers were impressed. or scared, that may have been a look of horror on their faces.

Onward & upward.....

another sharp curve, with a rock uphill. and its wet. did I mention that?

fuckin rain.

I took a few times trying to get up this, of course when I lost momentum, it would slide backwards because the rock was wet.

I met Dan & Dave who were in a truck, & offered to pull me up. Again I tried it, and this time I made it.

I got the clutch so hot that it wouldnt disengage at the top, so I had to let it cool down a bit.

I was hearing a scraping noise, seems I ripped the skipan loose on the left side

Finally, Im at the top!!!!!

Yay!!!!!

(Son of a BITCH!!!!)

the last 5 miles took 4 hours.

But I made it. so Kiss My Ass!

:)

I had wanted to hang out & savor the moment, but the lightning was moving closer from the west.

Probably not a good idea to be at 12k feet in a storm. So down I went.

downhill was really rocky & rough also. but at least I had gravity on my side.

Animas Forks

not only did I rip off both mounts on the front, the rear bracket got folded over the other way. I have NO idea how that happened!

I had met Joe & Bob earlier, who has a place in Silverton, & invited me to come there. As I had no skidpan, & the rain wasnt getting any less, I headed down to Silverton.

The ride down the valley was nice, lots of old mines & stuff to see

I go to town close to dark, Joe has an old house there he's been fixing up, & let me stay there. Bob was a good cook, and after a

great dinner of smoked ribs, I fell out. I was thoroughly beat!
