Effective immediately - I will no longer be making beveled lids on KP-3 style panniers. Furthermore, lid welds on KP-2s and KP-3s will no longer be ground flush.


The new style KP-3 lid is on the left; the old style on the right. Why?


For added strength and durability. Plus, they look better because of better fit-up. They are 1 1/2" deep, so with gasket, they are still at 2" +/-.

I want to produce those, but I need about $1500 worth of tooling to do it.

When I made them for my KLR, I had to manually make the slot, which took a good bit of time and was very imprecise. I don't want to offer that until I can reproduce them accurately and efficiently. In due time, I hope.

Got to say, I've been doing metal fabbing for over 30 years and you are doing great work. I'm impressed. If I get a bike that needs panniers I'll definitely look you up.

The guy I bought my corner notcher from has also been doing metal fab for over 30 years and I learned a lot from him just by talking to him when I picked up the tool. I try to learn as much as I can from guys who know the craft. I've really been enjoying figuring everything out. I feel I still have a lot to learn, though.

I haven't picked up the bike yet (fighting a cold or flu or something) and I don't think Kirk has ridden it. It's a pretty tall bike, though. I suppose if it doesn't lean enough, I can redrill the holes and relocated the bags easily enough. I don't ride very aggressively anyhow.

It's hard to judge from the pic but it looks more a matter of width then bag location. Anyhow definitely worth checking because even if you don't ride aggressively a bump in the road mid-turn can also reduce cornering clearance.
