I'm 100 pages into this book and it's excellent. The idea of smoking inside a submarine still blows my mind.

Smoking on Submarines

Glad you're enjoying it Houndlog and thanks for the feedback :)

They've banned smoking nowadays, but my recollection is that we were allowed to back in the '70s… that's how we noticed the shaking. Since writing the book I've read a really interesting one about the subs in the cold war called 'Hunter Killers'. When I read it, some of the tales we'd heard from the guys on the boat started to make a lot of sense. I now think that they'd been up in Russian waters and the torpedo story was a way of explaining why their nerves were shot without giving the game away… If you're at all interested it's a recommended read. I still can't get over what those guys were doing while we were swanning around on the topside.

Cheers
Andy
