Gear sticks 02 GS -Why?

Hi everyone, thanks for an exceptionally great forum with magnificent users and information.

I have a 2002 R1150GS with 60.000 miles on it. Had it for 3 years, never had any issues with it.

Last 2 months I have been noticing that when I put the bike in 1st gear from neutral, it sticks there and does not return up into the "median" position again. This also happens sometimes when I downshift from 3rd.

Observations related:
-This primarily happens when the bike is cold (almost every morning for first 10 minutes of ride
-It can also happen 1-2 times in five hours ride when the bike is warm
-I changed the gear oil, and the problem went completely away for 1000 miles. Then the problem returned. (Gear oil was perfectly clear, no shavings or particles)
-Stock tranny and engine

Does anybody have any theories on this? Much appreciated!

Don't know but I removed the external adjustment rod on a slightly later GS and found no grease left in there and the internal circlips corroding. I did not test ride the bike first but sure could feel something wrong with the shifter action in the shop, was way too tight.

Should also be some bushings on the shift lever that may need lube.

Shifted just fine on the long test ride.
Have tools, will travel!

I have been pondering this for more than a month, and you are completely correct. The issue is external, not internal! I feel like a complete fool.

My touratech gear shifter gets caught on the spring for the kick-stand. Doooh. That was the best tear-down that almost was, but never became of. Goodie. Now I can focus on getting the russian bike running. Thanks!
