I think you can load Topo on a Nuvi and choose to enable that map like on other Garmin units. They are limited in their track, waypoint and routing capabilities compared to the trail units. What bike do you plan to ride and on what route (A,B,C), Viper05?

Thx Yardstick, I was planning on the KTM and route B.

I wouldn't recommend a street model. My experience is that they don't play well with saved tracks.

Get one of the hiking models and Mapsource topo. You'll have to spend some time to figure out how to upload/download tracks, but you'll be on the same page as everyone else.

2nd that opinion. Sportmans Warehouse had a 62C on sale for $219 and I bought a used Oregon 450 for $180 on Fleabay.

Speaking of the Oregon 450, I've been compiling custom maps to use from the published forest service maps on this unit. They are KMZ files and work great on the 450. If anyone here wants these files PM me and I can email them to you. So far I've put together most of the Coronado National Forest maps and some of the lower portion of the Tonto Forest maps (Rolls, Bulldog Canyon, Queen Valley & Pinal Peak).

They look like this on the unit.

I can work on putting together a KMZ file for the Prescott national forest when I find it. Having a unit that accepts custom maps is feakin' awesome!

Nice! I have been putting the trails I want on the unit as tracks so it's less cluttered, but I like that! I have the KML files for PNF.

This is exactly why I don't like topo maps. It clutters the shit out of the screen. I rather have no maps and clean tracks than topo. I haven't checked out birdseye view which looks to be a sweet feature but it bogs the unit down and it's not free. I like free, so downloading these maps from the forest service is a close second.

sorry for the threadjack.

Just a quick reminder that the entry free increases by $10 starting at midnight tonight. We still have room but it is filling up fast so don't wait too long to get registered.

Another update on accomodations. There is plenty of tent camping at the Elks club and we will have port-a-johns on-site. Also, there is a limited amount of dry camping available, probably enough for 10 rigs if we position carefully, unfortunately no way to facilitate reservations so it will be on a first come first served basis. Tent and dry camping is a $10 a night donation to the Elks.

Believe it or not, this is an honest question:
How doable are the B routes on a 1050cc dirt tracker with a skilled rider? The videos give some prospective but it's tough to tell steepness of grades, size of rocks, clearance of the sump, etc.

There was a rider one year who did the "a" loop on a BMW 1200. If you are skilled as you say, it should be fine. Most folks wouldn't do it.
