Started out for a couple of days of scouting today. Knocked off about 150 miles and then gave it up. The rain last night pulled down a ton of leaves. Now the forest floor is covered in wet leaves with a lot of standing water. Way too slick for me to be in the back country alone. With more rain coming I decided to pick it back up next time I get up there.

Even some of the gravel was slick in the corners where a lot of leaves came down.

They got the bridge in just north of the Paulding Light overlook. In August it looked like this (washed out, etc).

Now it looks like this.

Maybe I can talk Bob into knocking off that track for me over by MQT before things shut down. It would take about a half a day.

Send me the track, along with what you need me to do...

Yeah this spring was not kind to a lot of the trails in the area. Now that the tourist are leaving some of us have some time to poke our heads out again.

@ Kingbee - yes the Mtn Bikers and Harleys were in full bloom this year. But there are increasing numbers of BMWs and hooligans on DS bikes to. If you want to see the area when its still like summer but a lot less people than even now come up in mid Sept.

The weather report induced us to scrub our camping trip but we drove the car up there Friday for some sightseeing, leafpeeping, and geocaching. Naturally, since we left the bikes at home, the weather was perfect- cloudy, cool, but no rain until nighttime. The colors were stunning as is the scenery. I'd forgotten what a pretty place it is. I'm still hoping to get up there for at least a day's riding this fall, though the color will be fading soon. Anyway, we had a nice drive, and it was good to get up there again.

Cheers,
Dave

The Ottawa

Lately my old KLX thumper has been begging for more mud and mosquitos so we found some in the Ottawa near Marinesco. The old 1993 disco colors fit right in with the Earthtones in the forest.

So...I finally got out and ran the Marquette track that Cannonshot sent me over the weekend. Here are some teaser photos...

Starts like this:

Has a couple of hills (they are always steeper in real life):

Crosses the Carp River:

Had to re-route around the "dump":

Part of the "re-route":

Passes Harlow Lake (I found a fancy smart phone laying in the trail here...was able to track down the owner later that evening):

Fall colors:

This was a really neat section of trail:

Jumps out on county road 510 for just a bit:

This was one of my secret trails.....until now:

Be sure to watch out at this bridge...there is a big hole in the middle of it!

Just enough rocks to keep it interesting:

How in the world did that thing get way out in the middle of 'da woods?

Thanks for verifying that track for me Bob. Glad you beat the snow. I'm sure I can incorporate it into some nice recreational dual sport loops for people to enjoy. I've been collecting a bunch of verified raws to work on over the winter. I'll put some new material up for download so people can enjoy it next summer. Thanks for your help!

Great shots, and some looks familiar. From my August ride, the bridge:

And the bus:

Did you get down to the waterfall? I'll bet if looks great with fall colors.

Bob, we need to get together and ride that area next year. We could compare "secret" trails

Cheers,
Dave

October in the UP

October in the Upper Penninsula of Michigan
Farming really crowded my biking this summer. But after potato harvest I went riding to Wisconsin's largest state park, ... the UP. Here is my brother Leo somewhere between L'Anse and Big Bay, Michigan on Oct. 19/20, 2013. I have the two 2001 F650GSs, one for me and the other for my bike-less brothers and Harley friends. I love how this part of the UP of Michigan is devoid of blacktop. It is perfect dual sport territory. We occasionally get a little misplaced in the woods, but between the maps and the GPS we sort it out. One could spend months riding the gravel up here. Thanks to you yoopers for sharing your territory! I also bought a 1999 BMW R1100GS last week. I know it is a bit old school and heavy, but I've always felt the need for the 'big' BMW. Still, the F650GS equipped with knobbies is the perfect bike for the type of riding pictured above.

There's one in Craig Lake SP, not sure if it's that one tho.
Looking like riding may be done for the year. Bummer.

The yurt is at the NE end of Nestoria Road on Teddy Lake, in Craig Lake State Park. It was a great overnight stay. It was toasty warm and dry. The yurt has bunk beds with mattresses, a table and chairs. The park provides dry firewood and a row boat for the guests. I was a big upgrade from camping. It would even be a great place to stay in the winter if one could manage to get back in through the snow. There is a gate at the entrance to the yurt, we had to tip our bikes sideways to get under it (... we questioned ourselves if this was really the right thing to do? ... somehow we justified the decision and rolled in). The yurt is then maybe 200 yards in from the gate.
