That's a reed valve head.

One from the berg,

Optical illusion or just another bent rear triangle? Just behind the seat. The lower chain stays would not offer any vertical support.

I was guiding him in exactly that direction. A Connie, ST1100, etc. would probably serve him better in the long run for just a tiny bit more money.

I just bought a very nice 1997 32,000 mile Concours for $1800, had to spend $120 to fix the brakes.

There are a plethora of Concours' C10s on CL locally, ranging from $2K to $3.5K.

I looked at ST1100s but there are a lot less of them about and they start more around the $3K mark.

Having ridden it for a couple of weeks, I've decided for the money it is a fine motorcycle.

i would try to talk him into a C10 or ST too. even a early 90's vfr750 can be had in that price range and as a rider rather then a collector would be a better buy for the money. or even a nighhawk 750?
i put maybe 120 miles on a vf500f, short story, and i was not impressed by anything but the great sound. i would even go as far as to recommend a ninja or GS500 over one.

of course for collector purposes $2000 looks like a fair price, if it is that clean, if buying for use as a rider, you can get one that's not as clean with lower miles cheaper.

if he doesn't mind a little work and maybe a little risk this may be worth a look, if i had cash i would go check it out but since my money is elsewhere i may as well share:

no location but it looks like grand junction or montrose
there's also a few i saw in the denver area when i was looking earlier:

For $2K I was steering him toward something newer.
I grew up on these and loved them. However, it's a 1983 and he'll be wrenching on it just like the 70's CB650.

Going from a 19" front wheel to a 16" front will take some getting used too as well as the power curve on the V4. They're great bikes and rock solid but, something goes wrong...well splitting the case isn't fun.

Hey thanks for all the replies guys! Didn't want to highjack too much, but really appreciate the feedback.

I saw that $1200 ST and had that "If it sounds too good to be true..." feeling...
