I sealed the gasket, reassembled, adjusted the valves and took out for a ride. However Oregon is in the middle of a storm so it was a short ride. Ran good tho, just like before. Still, where did that plug come from?

Thumb XR600 basket case revisited, part 2

So, I finally got my licensed basket case 1986 XR600 running perfectly (and looking darn good too, I think) as of this fall. However, in the process I ended up with a whole bunch of parts including a running but smoking engine and a bent frame. I have every part available to build me another one except for a frame, a piston and rings, and a little machine work.

As of today, 1/09/2014, I bought a 1986 XR600 red frame for 75$ off Portland Craigslist (thanks Mike, who btw, has other parts available). I'm going to build up another bike! This one doesn't have a title, and will be created out of all the 'lesser' parts, but will, with any luck and a little money, be a good runner and should carry someone around the bi-ways of Amurika! :)

First step - clean frame with simple green, clean the oil tank with solvent and then maybe some paint.

pictures to follow...

Here is a shot of the angle difference between the wrecked white frame and the unwrecked red frame.

I bought it this way but the story is is that he hit a 4-wheeler.

I think he got in to the reconstruction project, bought new used forks etc, but then realized the frame was DOA.

Hey Lands,
I'm looking for some stuff for my 87 XR project. Do you know if Mike has a brake caliper for an 88 or later XR? What else does he have? PM me his number if you can.
Thanks,

Decided to do a few things today. I guess I'm spending most of my time sorting bolts as I originally hadn't planned to put anything back together.

I worked on the bike a little today. Pulled the right cover off, installed magneto pickup and small o ring between cases. Installed oil lines. Installed rear brake hardware and lever. Also worked on wiring. Really haven't found a problem other than my handle bars and kickstand are bent. Sooo probably straighten the kick stand but try and find some used bars.
