Haven't tried it yet but suspect u r correct. Was all I had at time.

Just recently had my own experience with this in BW on my DRZ--stopped for a smoke/vape/BS session, then tried to restart only to find out the battery was dead. Kicked it, and it fired up after several kicks, and it did run but was missing at high RPMs. Bike died in Milton in front of the Local Yokel and wouldn't restart after a buncha kicks. Mug suggested pulling the headlight plug, and after that was done bike fired right up on the 3rd or 4th kick. Jumped on the interstate and except for a miss at >6500 RPM, bike ran great. Upon arrival in P-cola, battery was showing 11.7V...the ThumperTalk gurus say the DRZ needs at least 12V at the battery to run without misfiring, but they don't say how low voltage can go before the bike won't run at all. I'm guessin yer battery was REALLY dead

I've been told 1stGen KLRs will run on a completely dead battery, because 2 poles on the stator are dedicated to ignition (good idea, Team Green!). Don't have a kicker on the KLR and have never tried push starting it with a dead battery to find out if that's true or not. Apparently the 2ndGen KLR has a different stator, and they say it WON'T run on a dead battery. That's a step backwards...

I can say that I almost t-boned a car at 7pm one night on the 88 because the headlight was so dim they didn't see me. It was at that point I stopped at the nearest parking lot and called a ride home for truck and trailer.
