sometimes the driver of the car waiting to go straight has an epiphany at some point and realizes he can pass on the right, too. and then he just swings out to the right without looking to see if anyone is passing him on the right. if you are beside him at that "aha!" moment...

so i only do it if there is a lot of room, and i can get by quickly...and i'm in a hurry for some reason.

I do that in my car if the car behind me has his signal on. Its courtesy imho.

If he was on a bike I'd do the same thing, only while wishing I was on my bike also.

i make the turn. etiquette? if the light is green and people are turning 'n traffic is moving of course you do not ride or turn like that. it is both rude and dangerous. but if traffic is stopped and stuck and enough room is at the curb to allow you space to move up and turn? you aren't taking a space you are creating one behind you
